EAST LANSING–The No. 2 Boston College Eagles beat No. 4 Michigan State Spartans 3-0 on Friday night.
Michigan State head coach Adam Nightingale was disappointed with the Spartans’ style of play.
“We are a blue-collar hockey team and if we try to play white-collar hockey we are not that good of a team,” Nightingale said.
The Eagles had a scoring outburst in the second period, putting three goals behind Spartans’ goaltender Trey Augustine. Eagles forward Will Vote scored the first two goals in the span of six minutes, to give the Eagles the lead.
Then, in the final minute of the period, Eagles’ Center Oskar Jellvik netted a shot to extend the lead to three. Spartans’ captain Red Savage was also critical of the caliber of play from his team.
“We kind of embarrassed ourselves the first two periods and shot ourselves in the foot and left Trey [Augustine] out to dry,”
In a game where Augustine allowed three goals he still played well. The sophomore stifled many Eagles chances including a two-on-zero break from forwards Gabe Perrault and Ryan Leonard.
Eagles’ goaltender Jacob Fowler was stellar in a 24-save shutout, the fourth shutout of Fowler’s career.
Despite not breaking into the scoring sheet, the Spartans played a better third period, creating chances and limiting turnovers.
“We started to hang on to a few more pucks and not just chuck it around,” Nightingale said.
The Spartans will need to build on their third-period play to salvage a series split against Boston College on Saturday at 6 p.m.
