MSU Athletic Department hosts 9/11 tribute workout
On Wednesday, Michigan State University students, staff, and faculty, alongside East Lansing first responders, came together to pay tribute to the first responders that lost their lives answering the call following the September 11th attacks.
Pushing a resistance sled one yard for each live lost, physical workout tributes like this are common among first responder circles to pay homage to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Hosted by MSU’s Athletic Department, the tribute gathered around 45 participants from across campus and East Lansing to contribute to the 2,977 yards required to meet the goal of one yard per life lost on 9/11.
Invites were also extended to first responders from the East Lansing area. Dressed in their protective gear, firefighters from the East Lansing Fire Department took part as an acknowledgment to the firefighters who climbed the thousands of steps of the World Trade Center before its collapsed, with the hopes of finding and freeing survivors.
How businesses navigate cyclical nature of East Lansing
Every summer, Michigan State University students vacate the usually busy downtown of East Lansing and return by the thousands a few months later for the back-to-school rush. These cycles are a fact of life in a college town, but how do these patterns affect local storefronts and restaurants that remain here year-round?
Campbell’s Market Basket owner Ken Campbell said his business is “very much directly impacted by Michigan State” and the grocery store sees nearly a 50% increase in sales between the summer and fall months.
Ken said the clientele in the summer relies heavily on local East Lansing residents, families, and full-time faculty and staff.
This sudden rush in customers dictates inventory needs as well.
Rally House senior store manager Zach Hiscock said that the start of a new year coupled with football season means sales at the popular sportswear store increase dramatically when students move in.
One unique challenge that comes from running a college town business is navigating the age gap between managers and employees, Zach said.
Cottage Inn franchise owner George Hoover said he works at his eatery six nights a week so that he can enjoy his favorite part of the business: the customers.
George added that it’s important for local businesses to become a fixture not just within the student population, but also with long-term residents.
MSU and Boston College to honor 9/11 hero in football matchup Sept. 21
The upcoming football game between Michigan State and Boston College, scheduled for next Saturday, Sept. 21, will carry on a tradition with a much greater purpose than a regular football game.
This will be what’s known as the “Red Bandana” game at Alumni Stadium, which includes an annual tradition honoring fallen 9/11 hero Welles Crowther. (CROW”d”-thr)
Boston College players will wear special red bandana-themed uniforms with the words “For Welles” written across the back. Before the game, there will be a moment of silence held for Welles and all victims of the 9/11 attacks.
The game was also moved from its original time of 3:30 p.m. to the primetime slot of 8:00 p.m., where it will be nationally televised.
Welles Crowther was a former Boston College lacrosse player who always wore a red bandana his father gave him when he was six years old. After his college lacrosse career, Welles went on to work as an equities trader at the World Trade Center.
Despite having the opportunity to escape the building and save his own life, Welles wouldn’t leave until he could save as many people as possible, helping dozens of people escape before ultimately losing his own life when the building collapsed.
As the Michigan State and Boston College teams take the field under the lights, this game will be more than just a matchup between two storied programs; it will be a tribute to a hero whose legacy transcends sports.
