EAST LANSING– Former Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio has been named a part of the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame Class of 2024, the Tournament of Roses committee announced on Wednesday.
Dantonio led the Spartans to a 24-20 victory over the Stanford Cardinal in the 100th Rose Bowl on Jan. 1, 2014. This capped off a historic 2013 season where the Spartans won a program-record 13 games, finishing No. 3 in the national polls.
The Rose Bowl Hall of Fame was created in 1989, in its 35-year history, there have been 143 inductees.
Dantonio will join two other Spartans in the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame. College Football Hall of Fame and 2022 inductee running back Lorenzo White, who beat USC in 1988, and Kicker Dave Kaiser, who kicked a game-winning 41-yard field goal in 1956 to top UCLA.
Also included in the 2024 class, is Heisman Trophy-winning running back Reggie Bush from USC and two-time All-American running back LaMicheal James from Oregon.
In 2023, Dantonio came out of retirement to be associate head coach for the Spartans under interim head coach Harlon Barnett for the final ten games of the regular season.
In 16 seasons as head coach, Dantonio led the Spartans to a 132-74 record, winning three Big Ten regular season titles and two Big Ten Championships. In addition to his Rose Bowl appearance, he also won the 2015 Cotton Bowl and an appearance in the 2015 College Football playoff.
Dantonio developed many players, sending them off to the NFL. Some of his most notable include Jack Conklin, Le’Veon Bell, and Kirk Cousins.
Dantonio is also one of the three coaches elected to the College Football Hall of Fame Class of 2024, he will be inducted during the 66th NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 10, 2024.
