EAST LANSING- With just over 24 hours until the official start of Michigan State football’s 2024 season, many expectations and standards are being set for the success of the Spartans.
Coming into this season, there are many storylines to look for at the beginning of the 2024 season. Beginning with a brand new era brewing in East Lansing for the Spartans, Jonathan Smith is changing the culture and view of Michigan State and it starts on Friday.
With the addition of Smith, additional talent arrived from Oregon State. Quarterback Aidan Chiles, tight-end Jack Velling, offensive lineman Tanner Miller, along with a plethora of new coaches filling up the staff.
It all starts with your quarterback, and at Michigan State, a star has landed. Chiles has earned the call to be one of the five captains of the Spartans 2024 season.
Chiles has a large amount of potential that has translated to the success of his play in the offseason, but with the season looking ahead, he will need to take an extra step toward the Spartans overall success.
With Chiles set to be one of the significant leaders for the season, other players will have to step up for the Spartans, ensuring a better start than the 2023 season.
There are many Spartan leaders for every position on MSU’s roster, but Velling and running back Nathan Carter stand out as trailblazers for this team.
These two players have solidified their positions by the work they put in during the offseason. Velling and Carter have been sharpening each other, and that work ethic has spread throughout the entire team, making them legitimate threats on offense that Big Ten defenses will be scared of.
Another question Spartan fans are early to see is how star-studded freshman wide receiver Nick Marsh could be used in this fast-paced offense.
Who will Chiles target the most with his quick decision-making under pressure? These questions will all be answered this Friday night at Spartan Stadium.
Michigan State’s first opponent this season is FAU, a team looking to gain an identity this season. With it being year two under the reigns of Tom Herman, FAU has something to prove this Friday.
Florida Atlantic looks a lot different than it did last season, seeing many new transfers in key positions across their offense and defense.
Florida Atlantic’s new transfer quarterback Cam Fancher, had an impressive 2023 season throwing 2,162 yards and 11 touchdowns at Marshall. Fancher is smooth in the pocket with a great presence to take off when the pocket collapses.
FAU’s defense has a lot of holes that concern the defensive line and safety room specifically. MSU will have a good test on the offensive side against an unproven FAU.
Michigan State hopes to start the season strong under a brand new head coach with a new regime, and it begins now. The Spartans will start its season against FAU on Friday, August 30 with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m.
