On March 20, multitalented sibling duo Will Gao and Olivia Harding, better known as Wasia Project, took us on an atmospheric and contemplative journey with their newest release “Is This What Love Is?”
“Is this what love is? /
Or am I dreaming? /
Or am I feeling the pain of hunger /
And disdain for you?”
Although not inherently related, Wasia Project’s music always seems to put me in a very specific space. I picture a neon-painted alley at night, raindrops hitting the pavement and a bustling energy throughout. Except, it has that unique shot-in-a-movie feeling. One where the surrounding noise is foggy and distant; the camera focused on the slight bounce as you amble your way through.
“Is this what love is? /
‘Cause I feel lonely /
The feeling overflows me like a fountain or /
An avalanche on a mountain, oh.”
This song takes us through a universe of uncontrollable emotions. In an article from Dork, the duo remarks on its background explaining that, “It questions sadness and doubt in all types of love, and the drama that comes with caring deeply for things.” Olivia’s ethereal voice puts us into an emotional hyperspace surrounded by puzzling thoughts and varying feelings that could be love. There’s a sense of panic, anxiety and stress flowing throughout the song, but its serene instrumentals and gentle background vocals can’t help but put you a bit at ease.
