The explosion of social media in the last decade has given everyone the tools necessary to create music of all stripes. In particular, rap music has become inextricable from the Internet. Streaming services like Soundcloud have led to an entirely new genre of rapper and rap song, but not all of it has been entirely serious. One of the best ways to get your music heard is to make something unique, viral and memorable in order to stand out from the crowd. That can be through the song alone or through the way you present yourself. So, why not get a little silly with it?
What started off as a signature sound of rapper 645AR back in 2020 — the goofy chipmunk vocals combined with seemingly unironic lyrics and subject matter — has evolved with the help of new and dynamic rapper-comedians like Yuno Miles — a Michigan native — Zach Fox and RXK Nephew to form what is currently its apex with Baby Jayy’s “Good Morning.” While my initial thoughts when it came across my TikTok feed were just, “Haha sweet, another funny rap song,” it wormed its way into my head and won’t leave. Listen to it enough and it’ll be impossible to not hum this one or sing along next time you hear it.
I’ve sung the verse, “She said she wanna run away with me and hit the highway” at least 70 times in the last week. This is a strong contender for the song of the summer — and it’s only March.
