Canadian contemporary R&B artist Charlotte Day Wilson released her new single, “I Don’t Love You,” on Feb. 22. “I Don’t Love You” represents transformation, acceptance and moving forward, which is exactly what Wilson is doing as she prepares for a new album release and North American tour. This single, along with “Forever,” which was released last year, will be featured on her second studio album, Cyan Blue, which comes out May 3.
Wilson is a singer, songwriter, producer and instrumentalist. Growing up in Toronto, she studied piano and taught herself music production in her teenage years. Wilson plays many other instruments including bass, guitar, saxophone and more. She is also an openly queer artist that uses music as self-expression for others to listen to. Her music has a very particular sound with influences from jazz, R&B and soul.
In the 2010s, Wilson gained popularity for her song “Work,” which was later featured in season one, episode three of the hit show Euphoria. Wilson’s debut album, ALPHA, released in 2021 and has collaborations with artists including Daniel Caesar, BADBADNOTGOOD and Syd from The Internet.
In the beginning of “I Don’t Love You,” there is fragmented singing that’s hard to make out, as if it’s representing still being in a relationship and lost. The song transitions into the chorus, layered with some distorted vocals in the background. The vocals and instrumentals are soft and calm, representing calmness and acceptance. This song is all about choosing to let go of the past and moving on.
“I don’t love you anymore /
I don’t need you /
I don’t need you anymore /
And I don’t care if you look /
I won’t see you /
I won’t see you anymore.”
Released along with “I Don’t Love You” was a video directed and edited by Dani Aphrodite. During the distorted and fragmented singing in the beginning, the video is dark blue and black, almost somber. Wilson drives a car as a transition into the chorus, where the visuals become brighter.
She starts playing piano and writing a song, which symbolizes her self-expression and guidance through music. Overall, the video is grainy and looks vintage, with lots of blue relating to the album name and general vibe. Different elements overlap one another, like in the song itself.
Wilson will be starting her North American tour May 1, beginning in Seattle and ending in her hometown of Toronto. The names of all 15 tracks on Cyan Blue have been unveiled as listeners look forward to the album’s release 12 days before the start of the tour. “I Don’t Love You” is a strong start to a new era for Wilson.
