In a post-World War II society, British blue collar industries were in need of workers to fill shortages in the labor market. This brought forth the Windrush Generation, a mass migration of people from the Caribbean region to the United Kingdom.
Windrush played a vital role in shaping modern British culture, leaving a particularly significant impact on the music industry. It led an explosion of jazz, reggae, gospel and Calypso onto the scene during a time when swing and dance bands dominated London. These musical styles gradually merged over time, and have largely characterized the vibrant and diverse musical landscape of contemporary Britain.
This mixtape contains a few songs encapsulating the works of the Windrush Generation, as well as some of my personal favorites.
