Andrew W.K. is one of the most mysterious figures in all of music. Andrew Wilkes Krier grew up in Michigan and began studying piano at the age of four. Most of his life is unknown though, as most of his stories are buried under his stage name. The most interesting thing about Andrew W.K. is how he went from seemingly being at the forefront of music to having a small but devoted fanbase.
From playing on Conan O’Brian’s late-night show to hosting Cartoon Networks “Destroy Build Destroy,” Andrew W.K. has had major success, but many of his works have flown under the radar. I Get Wet is one of the most underrated rock albums of the early 2000s, and the track “She Is Beautiful” perfectly captures the energy and over-the-top behavior that Andrew W.K. is best known for.
The track begins quickly, and a zooming guitar ensues alone. Soon, a keyboard joins in as the guitar beats along and the drums start blaring. Listeners immediately feel the energy that is held within the track. Andrew W.K.’s shouting adds even more energy, forcing listeners to be captured within the music, opening with:
“I never knew girls existed like you /
I’d really like to get to know you.”
Musically, “She Is Beautiful” is nothing complex. It’s just fast, nonstop action that anyone can become lost in. It is all about fun and leaning into the zany energy brought by Andrew W.K.
“She Is Beautiful” serves as a love song on the surface, talking about how beautiful a girl is. But when further analyzed, the track is about taking risks in your life and living with less fear and doubt. All of these messages are constant in Andrew W.K.’s music, as in his later and most recent works he takes the time to help motivate listeners and help them through tough times. This song is nothing short of phenomenal fun. It blasts full-throttle energy at listeners and ends up being infectious.
