DEXTER, Mich. – On the rainy gray evening of Oct. 20, the Michigan State men’s and women’s team traveled to Hudson Mills Metropark to compete in the Eastern Michigan University Fall Classic.
The men’s team began its 5k race at 4:30 and placed first out of the nine schools at the Fall Classic. The Spartans scored 24 points that secured them the win while followed by Kent State with 42 points and Lansing CC with 54 points.
Sophomore Matthew Zeleke ran a 15:14.80 to earn himself a podium position with third place. Owen Gilbert placed 10th after running a 16:15.20 5k. Timothy Cherry and Hunter Zartman placed 13th and 14th running 16:23.50 and 16:24.90 respectively. Cole Toney finished out the list running a 17:15.40 to place 34th.
The women’s team swiftly followed, starting their 5k at 5:30. The Spartans had a dominant performance, placing ahead of the other eight schools competing against them.
Sophomore Chloe Wall led the way for the Spartans, running an 18:24.60 to place fourth. Finishing sixth with a time of 18:34.70 was Taylor Visscher. In seventh was Madison Price with a 18:43.30 time. Taylor Ewert, Allison Chimielewski and Abbey Carvey placed 10th, 11th and 12th with times of 18:52.00, 18:54.90 and 18:56.50 respectively. Sarah Coyne rounded off the list, running an 18:58.00 to earn a 14th place finish.
Next Friday, Oct. 27 the Spartans will be on the road back to Madison, Wisconsin to race in the Big Ten Cross Country Championship.
