$crim and Ruby are back to dominate 2023 with a three song EP, I No Longer Fear the Razor Guarding My Heel (V), released Aug. 11. This unexpected drop came as a blessing to dedicated fans, buzzing with their uncategorizable but easily recognizable punk-rap style. This is their 5th EP of the year, and they have yet to disappoint.
While I find every song to be engaging and refreshing from the multitude of $uicideboy$’s tracks I usually have on repeat, the first song “Not Even Ghosts Are This Empty” stands out as the overall loudest, angriest and grimiest — making it an instant personal favorite.
The $uicideboy$ stay true to their breakout, underground sound, floating on thunderous bass-heavy beats and always managing to keep their atmosphere churning. This new EP is no different. The lyrics and general message are also consistent with their tendency to shine light on the darker aspects of life.
“The tears I cried it could’ve iced my chain (My chain) /
And on the best days I can’t feel my face”
Singer Lil Psalm talks about how depression stunted his work, and then follows up by reminding listeners that he would combat bad days with heavy amounts of drugs. The $uicideboy$ are sober now, luckily, but they have no shortage of material highlighting their darker days.
“I try and I try to escape my own life /
At this point y’all should call me Houdini (Oddy don’t) /
It always ends up with me bleeding”
Here, Ruby compares his life to something of a magic trick, explaining how he had routinely hidden from his problems. He also recognizes that this was in vain and never resulted in any positive change.
All in all, the $uicideboy$ never fail to disappoint, and they have delivered once again. Shining light on topics many are nervous to even acknowledge takes guts, but delivering it in such a way that can genuinely touch lives is something to recognize.
