MSU Union evacuated after excessive steam release
At around 7 p.m. Wednesday night, the Michigan State University Union was evacuated after weather conditions exacerbated steam discharge from the building’s upper areas.
MSU Deputy Spokesperson Dan Olsen said there was no fire, but rather an optical illusion, caused by steam and wind, that appeared flame-like.
Student Life and Engagement, or SLE, Communications Director Kat Cooper said the cause of the steam release is still unknown.
Cooper said responders got to the Union on time, students were evacuated in an orderly fashion and panic was resolved.
Overloaded dryer causes fire in West Wilson Hall laundry room
On Wednesday afternoon, a fire was reported in the laundry room of West Wilson Hall, causing two fire trucks and cops to appear at the scene. The fire alarm went off and students were evacuated from the building.
Associate director for communications for the Residence Education and Housing Services Bethany Balks said no injuries were reported.
Balks said the fire was caused by an overloaded dryer that was “too full of items.”
According to an email blast sent to Wilson residents by Residence Hall Director Gregory Morgan, the West Wilson laundry room is temporarily closed until further notice.
The West Wilson laundry room under went cleaning and should be available to students by the end of the week.
MSU holds Hazing Prevention Week, raises awareness for students
Michigan State University campus offices and students are working together to raise awareness of hazing as part of the National Hazing Prevention Week. Hazing Prevention Week took place from Monday to today with four major events being held on MSU campus.
The MSU Office of Student Support and Accountability, or OSSA, defines hazing as, “requiring or encouraging any act, whether or not the act is voluntarily agreed upon, in conjunction with initiation, affiliation with, continued membership, or participation in any group, that causes or creates a substantial risk of causing mental or physical harm or humiliation.”
2023 is the first year that MSU’s Hazing Prevention Week has been hosted by a committee. The committee includes student voices as well as representatives from a range of campus offices and organizations.
Hazing awareness is particularly important on a college campus because young students attending college for the first time tend to be more vulnerable to hazing, Tom Fritz, a featured guest speaker at one of the workshops this week said.
The last event takes place today and is ‘Dough-not-Haze’ which will be at the MSU Union and will be a collaboration between the Interfraternity Council and Strange Matter.
Based on original reporting by Kaspar Haehnle, Daniel Schoenherr, Willow Symonds, Archer Guanco, Lauren Colin, Ridhima Kodali and Vivian Barrett.
To end our last episode of the week, here are a few announcements!
