Alternative-indie single “You don’t even know who I am” by underscores, re-released on Sep. 22 with her fourth album, Wallsockets, takes the listener on a journey through an imbalanced, toxic, one-sided relationship.
I’m ready to support your last effort /
I’m always here for you”
From the beginning of the song, underscores expresses devotion to an unidentified “you.” As the song moves out of the first verse, defeated, the chorus repeatedly chants:
“You don’t even know who I am”
While the lyrics from the first verse appear to be bright and supportive, they gradually twist and contort as the song progresses.
“I know what you’re scared of /
And I know what your blood type is /
You don’t even know who I am”
With a tone somewhat reminiscent of a stalker-like situation, the lyrics take a concerning turn. The relationship is so imbalanced: While she knows everything down to their blood type, the other is not even aware of her existence.
“You don’t even know who I am” highlights the dangers and intensity that can be reached in romantic relationships founded on infatuation and obsession. underscores explores these themes further in the music video.
