EAST LANSING – Michigan State University plans to fire head football coach Mel Tucker with cause, the school announced in a press release on Monday afternoon.
Tucker was suspended on Sept. 10 after a report from USA Today alleged that the former head coach sexually harassed activist Brenda Tracy, who previously worked with the football team.
“I, with the support of administration and board, have provided Mel Tucker with written notice of intent to terminate his contract for cause. This notification process is required as part of his existing contract. The notice provides Tucker with seven calendar days to respond and present reasons to me and the interim president as to why he should not be terminated for cause,” MSU athletic director Alan Haller said.
Tucker signed a 10-year, $95 million contract in 2021 while leading MSU to an 11-2 record.
Harlon Barnett will remain MSU’s acting head coach, as the university prepares for a coaching search.
