Since the mid 2010s, Bladee has been a staple of his genre, consistently creating music that’s unlike anything else out there and, for many, single-handedly defining the hyperpop-adjacent niche of electronic pop that he occupies. It seems with every new release — whether it be an album, single or ep — the rapper and Drain Gang co-founder manages to accomplish a sound entirely unique to him. The newest single he’s released, “Every Summer,” is, of course, no exception to the persistent quality he’s consistently set over the last nine years.
Being the first new song to release since his critically-acclaimed album Spiderr in 2022, “Every Summer” maintains a sense of euphoria throughout the track, employing a powerful electronic synth beat and layering vocals on top of that to create an all around incredibly atmospheric tune. Coming in at just under two minutes in length, the song does not overstay its welcome, instead allowing the listener to linger on every second of the melody as well as allowing for heavy listenability. Accompanying Bladee on the track is up-and-coming Drain Gang-affiliated artist Nation; their voices blend together to harmonize perfectly with one another throughout the verses.
“You are my only star /
You fall into my arms /
You burn a hole through all /
At last, starfall.”
As if the beat itself were not already top-tier, the lyrics to “Every Summer” are what really tie the song together. Repetitive yet catchy, Bladee sings of a love that’s doomed to fail, someone who he misses no matter how much time passes, perfectly encapsulating the feeling of a summertime “situationship” that’s ill-fated yet stays in the back of one’s mind for months or even years afterward. The theming Bladee employs here additionally ties back into what has become a very present subject matter in Bladee’s music over the past few years: ascending to a higher plane of existence, which only further emphasizes the euphoric atmosphere drawn about by the melody. As a whole, “Every Summer” perfectly encapsulates everything that makes Bladee not only who he is as a rapper, but as an artist.
