EAST LANSING – Michigan State volleyball hosted Belmont for the Kathy DeBoer Invitational Opener on Saturday morning at the Breslin Center.
The Spartans held the lead for the duration of the first set, finishing 25-17. The Bruins had a responsive defense, but struggled with fouls. Senior libero Nalani Iosia closed the set with a service ace.
Belmont struggled to get points on the board in the second set, trailing 6-0. Although the Bruins adjusted and closed the gap to a tie 16-16, they never obtained the lead.
The Spartans closed out the second set 25-19 after an attack error from senior opposite hitter Laura Shoopman and block assists from junior outside hitter Grace Kelly, and sophomore middle blocker Nil Okur.
Despite a rocky start to the third set, the Spartans made adjustments to build their lead. MSU increased its lead to 17, resulting in a 25-7 final score.
Up next, the Spartans will host Syracuse on Sept. 2, with gametime set for 7:00 p.m.
