Back to Those Ocean Days | “Ocean Daze” by Joshu

Ashe Burr, Writer/Volunteer

Ah, summer. A time where responsibilities seem to wash away like a wave on a sandy shore. The calming blues that litter both the sky and sea are beginning to creep their way into everyone’s minds. So, what better way to welcome the summer than with this song that evokes memories of just that?

Joshu is the Antiguan artist behind the song. A guitar virtuoso, the track is the title track of his EP of the same name. Ocean Daze is his first solo project since 2019’s album Lines of Time. Despite this, he has been releasing music since Lines of Time. In 2021, he released a collaborative EP with English folk singer India Blue. And seemingly like clockwork, two years on, a new project has been revealed.

The same soothing guitar that Joshu has made his trademark permeates the sound of “Ocean Daze.” The atmosphere that comes out of the Antiguan’s guitar is reminiscent of the Caribbean itself; calm, laid back and gorgeous. The sole usage of the acoustic guitar helps to establish this. Spare from some claps and whistling, it is just this guitar.

“I find it hard /

But that’s okay /

I’m going back /

Back to my ocean daze.”

If you are reading this article, chances are that you are an indiehead, loving the most obscure music to come out from all pockets of the world. This artist is absolutely one for you then. Despite releasing music for the better part of 5 years, only 3 of them have over 10,000 streams on Spotify, which is criminal in my humble opinion. This song, like the rest of his discography, sounds like sun on the beach. As summer approaches, prepare yourself for the season with this song.
