I Should Call Her | “Call Your Girlfriend” by Mipso
March 28, 2022
Bluegrass group Mipso is on a cover bender, and I am completely here for it. After the release of their self-titled album, Mipso, the group has released a cover of Death Cab for Cutie’s “I Will Follow You Into The Dark,” Guy Clark’s “Dublin Blues” and now Robyn’s “Call Your Girlfriend”.
Part of their 2022 Cover Series, Mipso’s version of “Call Your Girlfriend” was my first introduction to the song, but after learning it was a cover in the first place I went to check out the original. After listening to it, I was dumbfounded at the ability of Mipso to turn a very electronic, 2011-sounding song into a quartet with very few elements from the song’s original sound.
One of the things that keeps bringing me back to this song, almost every day at this point, is the effortless harmonies that group members Libby, Jacob, and Joseph sing. The transition from unison to two part harmony and finally to three part harmony scratches an itch in my brain that I didn’t know existed.
I could go on and on about the studio version of this song, but when it comes to live performances Mipso is one of the best. The group uploaded a live version of the song performed on a stoop in Albany, New York, and it is almost indistinguishable from the studio version.
Overall, there is so much more I could say about “Call Your Girlfriend,” but I think the song speaks for itself. Mipso is easily my favorite group of all time, simply because of the sheer talent each member brings. If you’re looking for a new song to add to a chill playlist, or just want to find a song from an artist you probably haven’t heard of before, “Call Your Girlfriend” by Mipso is for you.
