EAST LANSING — From Jan. 21-27, Michigan State athletics performed COVID-19 PCR tests on 1,035 student-athletes and 395 staff members. Of those 1,420 tests, five student-athletes and three staff members tested positive for COVID-19.
Currently, the teams undergoing daily antigen testing are men’s and women’s basketball, hockey, volleyball and wrestling. The other teams that are currently being tested weekly are men’s and women’s diving, men’s and women’s indoor track, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf and gymnastics.
According to Big Ten conference rules, those student-athletes and staff members who test positive for COVID-19 will be required to isolate from their respective teams and attend daily check-ins with athletic trainers.
Before returning to any workout activity, they must undergo further testing as directed by a medical staff member and pass a follow-up appointment with a physician.
Since early June, Michigan State has conducted 6,142 COVID-19 PCR tests with only 228 positives among the student-athletes and staff members involved.
More information about testing can be found on Michigan State’s COVID-19 testing and reporting database.
