EAST LANSING – Marcel Lewis — a redshirt freshman linebacker— has decided to enter his name into the transfer portal.

Lewis originally opted out of the 2020-21 season, but he later decided to return for the season after the Big Ten announced its new testing protocols for a season restart.
Lewis hasn’t appeared in a game yet this year; he appeared in three games on special teams last year, which preserved his redshirt ability. Lewis has struggled to crack out a consistent playing role as he has consistently received less snaps than Antjuan Simmons, Noah Harvey, Chase Kline, Jeslord Boateng and others.
Lewis — who originally committed to Michigan State on April 18, 2018 — was a three-star quarterback out of Chippewa Valley High School (Clinton Township, Michigan). He helped lead Chippewa Valley to a 31-30 state championship victory as a senior in 2018. During his time in high school, Lewis was named to the Associated Press Division 1-2 first-team twice. He was also named to the Detroit Free Press Dream Team twice.
It is uncertain at this time if Lewis will decide to return to MSU or eventually head somewhere else.
