Week 11’s “Five-Dollar” college football picks

Precursor: I’m not a facts guy, I’ve watched college football my whole life and make my picks based on my gut. On occasion, my gut will be skewed by alternate jerseys, stereotypes I’ve had since I was 10, and home ‘dogs because they’re usually barking.

  1. Illinois (+17) at Nebraska, Noon, BTN

Nebraska is coming off an impressive performance in Columbus almost upsetting the Buckeyes, as big of Scott Frost fan as I may be, The Cornhuskers will come out flat against the Illini. Illinois still has a chance to make a bowl for the first time under Lovie Smith, I’d expect them to be ready to play. My only concern with this pick is Illinois has a lefty quarterback in A.J Bush and I’ll never trust lefties in the sport of football but against my better judgment, Lovie Smith’s beard outweighs my concerns of the handedness of Illinois’s QB.

  1.  Texas (-2) @ Texas Tech – 7:30 p.m. FOX

Whenever these two teams play I will always think of the Michael Crabtree and Graham Harrell game in 2006 which has absolutely no relevance towards since I like Texas a lot in Lubbock. Also, Blake Gideon should’ve ended that game anyway in 2006 with maybe the worst dropped interception of all time. I digress, but Texas Tech is on their third QB this year, and it hurts to say but weapon/Ryan Gosling look-alike Kliff Kingsbury isn’t a good enough coach to overcome that type of adversity. Texas has too much talent on both sides of the ball for Texas Tech to keep up with the Longhorns. Horns very much up.

  1.  Northwestern (+10) @ Iowa- 3:30 p.m. FOX

Iowa still has an outside shot of getting of winning the Big Ten East if they win at Kinnick but I truly don’t see Nate Stanley and the Hawkeye offense putting up enough points against the Wildcats to make this a two-score game. Northwestern’s got run stuffers in Joe Gaziano and Paddy Fisher, and you can never doubt Pat Fitzgerald as an underdog, as the Wildcats are 4-1 against the spread as the underdog this season.

  1. Boston College (+19.5) vs. Clemson – 8 p.m. ESPN

Bark! Bark! Bark! Boston College is my home ‘dog of the week. Clemson has been murdering teams but I think Chestnut Hill will be buzzing with College Gameday coming to town and I’d expect the Golden Eagles to hang around for three quarters, enough to cover 19 and a half. A.J. Dillon is supposed to play on Saturday, Dillon is a monster and I think BC could slow the game down keeping the game closer than expected. Boston College is 2-0 against the spread as an underdog this season.

  1. West Virginia (-12) vs. TCU – Noon – FS1 – LOCK OF THE WEEK

Will Grier and the Mountaineers have an opportunity to get to College Football Playoff if they could win the BIG 12. After an emotional win against Texas I’d expect WV to use the momentum gained last week in Austin. Also TCU has become a dumpster fire with the on-field and off-the field issues Gary Patterson has had while being in Fort Worth. TCU lost to Kansas. That might be all the logic you need to empty the account on the ‘Eers.
