Chris Buescher, in his second full-time season racing in the NASCAR Xfinity Series for Roush Fenway Racing, is now a champion.
Buescher had a rather non-eventful race on Saturday evening en route to his 11th-place finish to secure the title over Chase Elliott by 15 points. The No. 60 of Buescher, along with his title competitors, Elliott and Ty Dillon, all ran in the middle of the pack and ended up going one lap down to eventual race winner of the Ford EcoBoost 300, Kyle Larson, but it would not matter to Buescher and his team.
“I did a good job masking it didn’t I?” Buescher told NASCAR.com after the race. “I was a little nervous. All things considered, that was exactly what we needed to do, and we knew that and knew we were capable of doing it.”
“I’m glad [my mother] let me [pursue a racing career],” he said while celebrating his championship. “I think she’s OK with it now. I have to thank my parents so much for the opportunity to be here and leave home and do this.”
The 23-year old native of Texas is now a champion, which begs the same question that Erik Jones, the NCWTS champion is facing: what’s next?
“We’re still not sure what his arrangement is going to be next year,” team owner Jack Roush told NBC. “He will be involved in a Cup car to some extent, but whether it’s a part-time program or a full program, we’re still in the midst of finalizing the conditions [for 2016].”
Buescher ran a couple races in the No. 34 car for Front Row Motorsports earlier this season as the Brian Vickers move caused some shuffling throughout the garage area.
Winning only two races this season at Iowa Speedway and Dover International Speedway, respectively, and grabbing 19 top 10 finishes, Buescher’s season was truly one of consistency.
For me, Buescher has always been a Matt Kenseth like driver. Someone who just goes through the motions; he could be a lap down in the middle of the race, but when the checkered flag flies, he would be right there and get a top five or top 10 finish.
To celebrate, Buescher had a pizza party after Saturday evening’s race.
“A lot of hard work finally came through. Now we get to celebrate a little bit in the next couple days.”
