The long anticipation of a contract extension for the 24-year old defenseman, Danny DeKeyser, is over.

Today, DeKeyser’s agent and Red Wings general manager, Ken Holland, came to an agreement on a two-year contract, with a salary-cap hit of $2.187 million annually.

Preparation for his second season will get under way this weekend at training camp, where the Red Wings will analyze their young team and morphed defense.

Last season, DeKeyser played in 65 games and accumulated 23 points, accompanied by a plus-10 record.

Just a day ago, DeKeyser was still seeking an answer from the Red Wings organization and his agent alike.

“I watch all the contracts, but it’s hard to compare unrestricted free agents with restricted free agents as far as rights go,” DeKeyser said to The Windsor Star in Aug. “I think with a lot of restricted free agents it takes a little bit longer than with unrestricted guys just because there’s not much room for guys (RFAs) to go anywhere.

“It just seems like it’s a longer process.”

“It would be nice to figure something out long-term but we’ll just have to see where everybody’s at,” DeKeyser said.

DeKeyser was a restricted free agent before his extension, and before that, made his first appearance for the Wings at the end of the 2012-2013 season. After proving himself worthy of a starting role with the Western Michigan Broncos, the team decided to sign him.
