What is it?
In 2015, Michigan House was established as a conglomerate for global enterprise, government, entrepreneurs, philanthropists and musicians who defy rustbelt expectations. They have grown and become “The Great Lake State’s experiential embassy” to the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas. Michigan House works to provide partners and communities with access to SXSW’s audience by showcasing an authentic Michigan-made environment and vibe. This is done through conversations, performances, events, diversity and hospitality. Owned and operated by Creative Many and Middle West, Michigan House has existed during SXSW as a pop-up space.
What’s the deal with the owner?
Michigan House was started by Creative Many, which is “a statewide organization that develops creative people, creative places, and the creative economy for a competitive Michigan.” Creative Many has offices in Detroit and Grand Rapids where they have been leading the effort to “change the national narrative about what’s going on in Michigan.” For the past three years, Michigan House has been at SXSW, T. and it has continued to grow over the past few years and is part of the festival.
Who’s playing here?
This year’s lineup is impressive. With performances by Michigander, Tiny Jag, Steppes, The Seventh and Brother Elsey, there’s something for every music lover. On top of hosting some great musical acts, Michigan House also has a full lineup of additional panels and events. From a “Startup Crawl” and a seminar about Detroit’s first self-driving cars, to a beer and cheese pairing event hosted by Bell’s Brewery. There are plenty of things to stay occupied and entertained while checking out Michigan House. Check out their full schedule here.
Judging by how rapidly Michigan House has grown since 2015, it’s safe to say that the pop-up can only get bigger from here. With it becoming an integral part of SXSW, more festival goers have a chance to fall in love with the music and creativity that comes from the Great Lakes state. This year Michigan House will be stationed at The Refinery, an event space in the heart of downtown.
