EAST LANSING–Michigan State volleyball is off to its best start since 2012, having opened the season with seven straight wins. The Spartans look to remain hot as they host the Kathy DeBoar Invitational starting Thursday, Sept. 18 through Saturday, Sept 20 at Jenison Field House.
The Spartans come off of an impressive Kennesaw State Invitational where they secured a pair of victories. On Thursday, Sept. 11, MSU started the invitational off strong with a four set win over host Kennesaw State, then winning a close five set match against Appalachian State on Friday, Sept. 12.
Freshman setter Malayah Long has played a key role in the Spartans success and was recognized, as she was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week. Long led the conference with a total of 147 assists and averaged 11.31 assists per set in MSU’s last three matches.
The Spartans aren’t the only team entering the weekend with some momentum. Binghamton University went undefeated at their home invitational, securing wins in all three games against Mercyhurst, Canisius, and Bucknell. The team earned multiple weekly honors from the America East conference including outside hitter Merima Smajlovic selected as Player of the Week and right side hitter Maya Coblentz-Brown earning Rookie of the Week.
Michigan State looks to continue their undefeated streak against Binghamton on Thursday, Sept. 18, at 6 p.m. The team will also take on Bowling Green and SIUE over the weekend.
