EAST LANSING— The Michigan State football coaching staff is sure making an effort to shore up the tight end position.

Jack Nickel, a high three-star tight end, became the 14th overall commit within the Spartans’ 2022 recruiting class on Thursday afternoon. The Alpharetta, Georgia, native was previously committed to Notre Dame but rescinded his commitment on April 13. He previously visited MSU from June 4-6.

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Nickel currently plays for Milton High School, located in Milton, Georgia, and had 27 receptions for 327 yards and three touchdowns in 2019. He is also a two-time first-team All-State selection and won a state championship with Milton in 2018 as a freshman.

According to 247Sports, Nickel is the No. 48 overall recruit in Georgia and the No. 23 overall tight end prospect in the nation. In addition to being offered by MSU and Notre Dame, he held over 25 Division I offers from schools such as Florida State, Oregon, Nebraska, Maryland, Purdue, Northwestern, Wisconsin, Penn State, Iowa, Indiana, Miami (FL), NC State, LSU, Kentucky, Virginia Tech, Colorado, California, Boston College, Vanderbilt and Louisville.

Nickel is the second highest-rated recruit within coach Mel Tucker’s 2022 class, only trailing quarterback Katin Houser. He is also the second tight end commit after fellow three-star and Arizona native Michael Masunas committed to MSU back on June 19.

With the addition of Nickel, MSU’s 2022 recruiting class is rated by 247Sports as the No. 27 best in the nation and the No. 6 best in the Big Ten.
