Women’s Swimming and Diving Returns Home

The women’s swimming and diving team returns home to compete against the University of Toledo on Friday.

“I thought we did well,” head coach Matt Gianiodis said. “It was a tough trip. We bussed seven and a half hours on Friday and got right off the bus and competed I thought pretty hard. We put a lot of events on a lot of kids. I thought we did really well.

“I was a little disappointed on the women’s score because I thought we had a real shot of beating both teams so that was a little disappointing, but from an overall performance standpoint I thought we did pretty well.”

Last weekend at Buffalo, the women lost in the last race against Army, but Coach Gianiodis does not think that will affect their performance in the meet against Toledo.

“I think they feel fine. When you have 20 events like that and an event here or an event their there can really make a difference. We will be home which will be nice,” Gianiodis said.

The Toledo’s women’s team currently has a record of 1-1. They beat Duquesne University away 141-121, but they fell to Eastern Michigan at home 103-197.

Toledo’s team has a top performer that was named Mid-American Conference swimmer of the week. Junior Lauren Comer had an excellent performance in the meet against Duquesne. She won in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:54.86.

The Spartans have a very talented team to fight back. In the meet against Buffalo and Army, senior Shelby Lacy won in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.54. Elizabeth Brown clinched a win in the 200-yard butterfly.

“When we swam against Iowa on the women’s side, even though we didn’t win I thought we performed well. If we perform as well as we are capable of I think we will do fine,” Gianiodis said.

The women will be back in action Friday, Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. at IM West to take on Toledo.
