Women’s Basketball Routs Alcorn State

The now No. 18 Spartans returned home, after a successful road win, to take on the Alcorn State Braves on Tuesday night.

Starting for the Spartans were Tori Jankoska, Jasmine Lumpkin, Aerial Powers, Anna Morrissey and Becca Mills.

Less than six minutes into the game the Spartans opened up a 13-3 lead on the Braves. Alcorn did not score until 10 minutes into the game. The Spartans managed a 22-3 lead, before the Braves lessened the gap and ended the first half down by eight.

“I asked them what team they wanted to be,” head coach Suzy Merchant said. “We got off to a good start then we told ourselves ‘we got this’ and stopped playing.”

Norianna Haynes led the Alcorn team with 16 points and was the only Braves player who scored in double-digits.

The Spartans came back in the second half and commanded the rest of the game. With a 17-5 run early in the second half, the Spartans managed a 77-41 win over the Braves.

Powers led the team with a game-high 23 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Jankoska followed behind with 17 and Mills had 10.

“The biggest thing when it comes to being a leader is showing,” Powers said. “You have to show up every game, you can’t just talk the talk”

The Spartans will head to Florida next for the Florida Sunshine Classic. The Spartans will first take on Baylor in Winter Park, Florida on December 20, at 4:00 p.m.
