Wings Look Ahead to 24th Consecutive Playoff Birth

Wings+Look+Ahead+to+24th+Consecutive+Playoff+Birth

The Detroit Red Wings have surprised many people around the NHL with their play so far this season. With 14 games to go in the 2014-2015 season the Wings currently have a record of 38-19-11, which is good for 87 points and third place in the Atlantic Division behind the Montreal Canadiens and Tampa Bay Lightning.

Last year, the Wings faced many obstacles, including losing Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg for a large portion of the season. At one point, they had a big majority of their starters listed on their injury report. Still, with all that they managed to reach the playoffs for a 23rd consecutive year.

This season is a much different story for the boys in Hockeytown. With the exception of  Johan Franzen, who has been out for months dealing with a concussion, the team has been able to remain mostly healthy and their play this season has flourished as a result.

If the playoffs were to start today, the Wings would face off against division foe Tampa Bay in the first round.

The Lightning have been a tough opponent for the Red Wings this season, as the Wings have have yet to beat them. Most of this is because of the outstanding play of Tampa Bay goaltender, Ben Bishop.

The 6-foot-7 net minder currently holds a .915 save percentage and a 2.32 goals against average.

Also, it should go without saying that when you have Steven Stamkos on your team, you have a pretty good shot at succeeding in the postseason.

However, if we know anything about the Red Wings, it is that come playoff time, head coach Mike Babcock will have the boys prepared. It has been seven years since the Wings have brought the Stanley Cup to Detroit, and Hockeytown is getting antsy.
