The Fighting Irish Come to Spartan Territory

Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving will be making their way to MSU this Friday.

So far this season, Notre Dame has swam against Olivet Nazarene at their own 50th Annual Dennis Stark Relays. ND came out on top at the relays, beating Olivet 240-140. ND lost when they faced Purdue, falling 161-139.

Notre Dame just recently came back from a two-day meet against Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech. They came up short against Virginia Tech, but beat Pittsburgh.

MSU head coach Matt Gianiodis said his team has a few things to work on before their next meet.

“I would like to position our relays within the conference a little better,” Gianiodis said. “I think we are better than what we have shown so far by individual splits. I would say that’s our biggest area of improvement right now.”

Notre Dame has been successful on the boards in relays. One of the dynamic four relay teams for the 200-yard medley relay consists of seniors Zachary Stevens and Patrick Olsen and freshmen Gabe Ostler and Joseph Krause.

Krause is currently the record holder for the 50-yard freestyle at MSU.

“I think the team did really well (in the Spartans’ last meet at Buffalo),” junior Nate Weeks said. “We did a lot of good things, especially after coming off a long bus ride. We really overcame a lot of hardship and pulled it together.

“I think top to bottom we need to bring more intensity because [Notre Dame] is a team that wants to and has the ability to beat us,” Weeks said.

Weeks has had a good season so far for the Spartans. In the meet against Iowa he clinched first place in the 200-yard butterfly and 200-yard medley.

In the meet at Buffalo, Weeks continued to perform well by winning the 200-yard butterfly and placing second in the 200-yard medley.

The men will be back in action Friday, Nov. 14 in IM West at 5 p.m.
