The Detroit Red Wings were rejected at the start of free agency on July 1, 2014. The team went after four different players that ended up elsewhere for a variety of different reasons.
At the beginning of free agency, general manager Ken Holland understood that he needed to acquire a middle-tier winger along with a top-tier right-handed defender, but the Wings came out empty handed.
Xavier Ouellet has officially played in the NHL and looks as though he needs to be developed a bit more, before he can wear his wing-wheeled sweater again.
Ouellet, a 6-foot-1 native of Bayonne, France, weights in at 190 pounds and has the left-handed curve that is naturally brought into the Red Wings farm system. Ouellet has recorded three 40-point seasons, including recording 60 points in 63 games in his 2011-12 junior hockey season.
