Spartans Earn No. 3 Overall Seed in NCAA Tourney

An inconsistent Internet feed from NCAA.com made the room even more tense as the Spartans eagerly waited to see where they would end up in the NCAA Tournament.

Statistical Breakdown of Men’s Soccer vs. Maryland

It is Big Ten Tournament time for men’s soccer and it is no surprise the games are amplifying in magnitude.

Michigan State will face Maryland on Friday and both teams would love to secure a spot in the Big Ten Championship game, set to be held on Sunday.

Although both teams are expected to make the national tournament, a win could burgeon the stock of either one. Maryland comes in favored with the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten and home-field advantage. Men’s Soccer Looks to Defeat In-State Rival

Sunday at 2 p.m,  the Michigan State men’s soccer team will attempt to replicate the success of their acquaintances playing American football. The Spartans and Michigan Wolverines will be battling again for the Big Bear Trophy, which currently resides in East Lansing.

In years past, Michigan State has had immense success at home, winning the last five contests at DeMartin Stadium against their in-state rivals. Michigan comes in at 5-7-3 (2-2-2 in the Big Ten) while MSU boasts a 9-3-4 (3-1-2) record that has kept them in the top 25. Opinion: Men’s Soccer Ready for Fighting Irish

In the last three years, the Spartans and Fighting Irish have met on the pitch five times. Three times during the regular season and two times during the NCAA Tournament.

Spartans and Wildcats Draw in Defensive Battle

In a hard-fought match between both sides, Michigan State and Northwestern could only notch one goal apiece in 110 minutes of play.

The Wildcats came out with high pressure against the Spartans, but Michigan State would set themselves up first for scoring opportunities as they earned a corner kick in the second minute and redshirt senior forward, Tim Kreutz, whipped in a cross in the eighth minute that was grabbed by senior goalkeeper, Tyler Miller. It’s not uncommon for collegiate soccer players to cross paths with former teammates they played with at the youth soccer level. When the Michigan State Spartans and Western Michigan Broncos take the field on Wednesday at 4 p.m., many paths will be crossed.

Sophomore midfielder, Dewey Lewis, redshirt freshman, Ryan Scott, and junior midfielder, Jason Stacy, grew up on the west side of Michigan and played youth soccer for the Grand Rapids Crew Juniors along with several Western Michigan University players. Read More…

Athletes of the Week: Jamie Cheslik and Zach Bennett

Freshman forward, Jamie Cheslik has been nothing short of exceptional this year for the Spartans when it comes to scoring goals and showing her perseverance in matches.

Cheslik leads Michigan State with seven goals, which is tied for sixth place in the Big Ten. She also has two game-winning goals for her team this season which have come on the road against Oakland University and California State University, Fullerton. Read More…

Chapman Gives Spartans Third Win of the Season

After a game full of turnovers against the Valparaiso University Crusaders on Thursday, the Spartans regained composure and their shutout streak against the Loyola University Chicago Ramblers, 1-0 Sunday.

Right from the sound of the opening whistle, Michigan State began relentless pressure on Loyola’s defense.

Late Goal Gives MSU First Win

The Southern Methodist University Mustangs may have only won three games last season, but they did not look like a three win team Friday night as they played the Spartans tough for 90 minutes.

Right from the kickoff, SMU put pressure on No. 10 Michigan State and created multiple scoring opportunities, with their best scoring chance coming in the 10th minute when the Mustangs sent a dangerous ball into the Spartans’ 18-yard box, which hit a head and forced MSU goalkeeper, Zach Bennett, to make a diving save in the air to prevent the goal.

NCAA gives Spartans an Eleven Seed

EAST LANSING, Mich. – As the clock struck noon on Monday, 27 men’s soccer players and their head coach eagerly waited to see where their 12-5-3 record would place them in the NCAA tournament.

It took nine minutes for the Spartans to get that answer, but that eagerness quickly turned into cheers as they saw that they earned an 11 seed.
