The Red Wings franchise goes much deeper than just the players that put on the Winged Wheel night in and night out. Beyond the hunt for free agents, the formulation of contracts and devising a plan to meet the salary cap, general manager Ken Holland alongside head coach Mike Babcock work to create both a great dynamic in the Wings locker room as well as their AHL affiliates.

Beyond Babcock and Holland is a long list of coaches and developers that help create young prospects into NHL superstars. The Red Wings have lived by a motto of playing three years in the AHL before playing in the NHL.

Detroit Red Wings Trade Deadline Special

With the NHL trade deadline a little over a week away, the Detroit Red Wings’ front office should expect to be among the most active teams at the deadline. Now that team captain has had surgery on a serious back injury, Detroit will be looking for more leadership and experience as they prepare for a playoff push.

The Red Wings currently sit in eighth position in the Eastern Conference, but teams like Columbus, Ottawa and Washington are just a single point behind that coveted final playoff spot.

Alfredsson Returns, Gustavsson Stands Tall, Wings Beat Habs

The Red Wings took on the Montreal Canadiens at Joe Louis Arena on Friday evening. With a good showing from young Riley Sheahan and a strong return from veteran Daniel Alfredsson, the Wings put a solid hold on a declining Canadiens team.

Sheahan had family and friends in the stands during Friday night’s game, giving him a bit more motivation to score because the Sheahans are Habs faithful. He scored the second goal of the game, rocketing a wrist shot over the glove hand of Carey Price with 8:12 remaining in the second period.

Riley Sheahan Gets First NHL Goal, Tatar Honors Recently Lost Father

When Tomas Tatar scored in the third period on Saturday against the Los Angeles Kings, there was a different vibe at the Staples Center than any other goal that was scored in the game.

Tatar’s father died this week of a liver ailment, but through strength, determination and a predisposed conditioning of winning permanently stamped into the forward’s brain, the 23-year old from Slovakia played and produced in honor of his fallen father.
