Cyclones Sweep Into East Lansing

On a gloomy day in East Lansing, a wicked wind blew into town from Ames, Iowa. The No. 16 Cyclones of Iowa State University came to East Lansing to square off against the men of Sparta.

The match began at 133 pounds with No. 16 Javier Gasca of MSU squaring off against No. 12 Earl Hall. Gasca wrestled very hard and came out with a 5-3 victory over a ranked opponent. This victory left the Spartan faithful roaring after a last-second takedown. Gasca is a wrestler to keep an eye on for the grappling fan. Read More…

Spartans Start Strong, but Fall to Gophers

The Michigan State wrestling team lost to No. 2 Minnesota, 36-3, at the Sports Pavilion in Minneapolis for the Big Ten opener Friday night.

The Spartans (2-2) were facing a tough match up with the Gophers (4-0), but they got things going when redshirt freshman Mitch Rogaliner won a 7-5 decision over Jordan Bremer at 125 pounds. This was his first career start in a Big Ten dual and he improved to 7-2 for the season. Read More…

Wrestling Soars at EMU Open

The Michigan State wrestling team went 2-1 at the Eastern Michigan Duals on Saturday in Ypsilanti. The Spartan squad defeated Kent State (32-7) and Olivet College (44-0) and lost the match to Chattanooga (24-13).

Nick McDiarmid (197) John Rizqallah (184) Roger Wildmo (157) and Javier Gasca (133) went 3-0 on the day, setting the bar for MSU. Read More…

Spartans Salivate for EMU Open

The grapplers of Sparta have their next open event this coming Saturday in Ypsilanti at the EMU Open. The Spartans, coming off a successful MSU Open, look to continue their momentum before starting off the long season of dual meets. A couple of wrestlers to keep an eye on at the open are John Rizqallah, Nick McDiarmid and Garth Yenter.

Rizqallah, the 184-pound wrestler, qualified for the NCAA Championships last year. This is Rizqallah’s senior year at MSU, so you can be sure that he will leave it all on the mat night after night. Not to mention, Rizqallah has a wrestling style all his own on the mat. Read More…

Roll Out: MSU Wrestling Preview

It is that magical time for wrestling fans. Time to roll out the mats and bust out the headgear, or in my athletically challenged case, pull out the computer. For Michigan State wrestling fans, the season is rapidly approaching. Head coach and parrot aficionado Tom Minkel recently released the MSU grappling schedule.

It will not be an easy season this year, as the Spartans take on eight of the top 25 teams from last year, including a home dual against four-time reigning NCAA Champion, Penn State. In total, Michigan State will take on six ranked teams at home in the Jenison Field House.

These select few are given what used to be the most overlooked position on the team: offensive lineman.

You are never really shown highlights of the offensive line unless a former lineman is working in the announcing booth and points out some intricate detail about the foot or hand speed of the lineman that bores the average fan.

Bittersweet Spartan Symphony

Last.

This bittersweet adjective is one that MSU seniors have been using a lot lately when referring to the winter of their collegiate experience. The last semester, last class, last chance.

For Michigan State’s heavyweight, Mike McClure, his last season for MSU went out on a highlight. McClure finished the NCAA Championship with a fifth place finish and secured All-American honors over the weekend. McClure is the first Spartan All-American heavyweight since Don Whipp in 1993.

Pinned Down – #4 – 3/13/14

In the fourth podcast of Pinned Down, host Nick Carver recaps the Big Ten Wrestling Championships.

While the Spartans finished twelfth out of twelve teams in the field, two Spartan wrestlers placed at the tournament and earned NCAA Championship berths.

Mike McClure finished fourth in the Big Ten Championship and John Rizqallah finished seventh.

Madhouse in Madison

Over the weekend, the Spartan wrestling team competed at the Big Ten Championship in Madison, Wis. And while the team placed last with 21.5 points, there were bright spots for the men of Sparta.

Senior Bobby Nash, 165 pounds, placed ninth after his 7-3 victory over Purdue’s Pat Robinson. Junior John Rizqallah, 184 pounds, placed seventh thanks to a 4-2 decision over Indiana’s Luke Sheridan. Rizqallah also earned his second-straight trip to the NCAA Championships after his victory.

Spartans Prepare for Postseason Push

In any sport the regular season can be seen as a precursor for what is to come. This weekend at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis. the Michigan State wrestling team looks to come out and show the Big Ten Championship exactly what they are made of.

The road will not be easy, much like the rest of the Spartans’ season, for the grapplers of Sparta.

Spartan Wrestlers Finish off Dual Season against No. 24 Chippewas

Riding a two-dual win streak, Michigan State’s wrestling team looks to finish their dual season on a high note against the No. 24 Central Michigan Chippewas.

The Spartans (7-10) are coming off a 40-0 shutout over Olivet College last Friday on the team’s senior day at Jenison Field House. MSU stacked up the style points in the Olivet dual with two falls and four major decisions, including four victories for all the Spartan seniors, two of which were pins.

Pinned Down – #3 – 2/17/14

The Spartans got their first Big Ten win by way of defeating Indiana, 18-16 last Sunday in Hoosier country. The meet came down to the final match with the Spartans trailing the Hoosiers, 15-16. Garth Yenter sealed the victory for the Spartans with a season defining 10-3 decision victory.

Spartan Seniors Strive for Strong Showing

Michigan State’s wrestling squad will wrap up the home season Friday against Olivet College at noon.

The Spartans (6-10 overall, 1-7 Big Ten) finished their Big Ten season on a high note with a victory in at Indiana (8-8-1, 0-3) last Sunday thanks to a huge win from Garth Yenter at 133 pounds.
