Wings Rejected in Free Agency, Still Optimism for next Season

The Detroit Red Wings were rejected at the start of free agency on July 1, 2014. The team went after four different players that ended up elsewhere for a variety of different reasons.

At the beginning of free agency, general manager Ken Holland understood that he needed to acquire a middle-tier winger along with a top-tier right-handed defender, but the Wings came out empty handed.

Alfredsson Looks to Return for 19th Season

The Detroit Red Wings are working hard in the front office to solidify a roster that would guarantee a playoff appearance in the 2014-2015 season.

Throughout most of this offseason, general manager Ken Holland has been waiting to hear from Daniel Alfredsson on whether or not he wants to return for a 19th season in the NHL. On Monday, Holland told the Free Press that Alfredsson called him and said, “He wants to play again.”

Octopi Hockeytown – #6 – 3/25/14

Octopi Hockeytown returns again with a happier tone than last week. The Red Wings took seven of eight points from four games in the past week, and look as though they will be able to make a solid playoff run.

Gustav Nyquist has seven points on the week, scoring six goals and recording one assist with a +8 rating.

Lighting Strikes Wings Late

The Detroit Red Wings would have liked to accumulate two more points before they wrapped up play for the 2014 Winter Olympic break, but they couldn’t Saturday night. Ten Wings will go to Sochi after the loss to Tampa Bay and the rest will take a two week vacation.

The veterans gave the Red Wings a boost late in the first period when Daniel Alfredsson picked the corner of Tampa Bay goalie Ben Bishop off of a pass from behind the net from the magic man. Pavel Datsyuk collected his 800th career point in 816 career games on the first period goal.

Octopi Hockeytown – #2 – 2/5/14

So far, it has been interesting.

The Detroit Red Wings are fifth in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference with 62 points in 56 games. They are currently in the last playoff spot of the regular season if the season were to end today. Austin talks about the Wings’ solid play that has helped them wind up in a spot where they can still compete to keep their playoff streak alive.

They go into their last two games before Sochi starting Thursday, against the Florida Panthers, and finishing up Friday against Tampa Bay. Austin Goodman breaks down past week’s play against Philadelphia, Washington and Vancouver.

Ten Red Wings Headed to Sochi Games

In February, Sochi, Russia, will be hosting the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. The ice hockey competition has once again placed marvelous teams together with a compilation of the best NHL players representing their homeland.

The Detroit Red Wings have ten players going to the games, six of which are playing for Sweden, two for Slovakia, one for Russia and one for the United States.

The team is currently sitting in fifth place in the Atlantic Division with 52 points after 48 games played. With the long list of injuries still in the forefront of everyone’s brain, the Wings are in a predicament that could cost them their 22-season streak of consecutive playoff appearances.

Goaltender Showdown at Madison Square Garden

Though neither team had scored by the end of the second period Thursday night, the Madison Square Garden matchup never seemed dry. Henrik Lundqvist of New York and Jimmy Howard of Detroit both put up great numbers and showcased some of their best work all season.

Jimmy Howard had a 3.93 GAA and an .864 save percentage in the month of December, posting zero notches in the win column and receiving two regulation losses and one overtime loss in three games. After his numbers continued to increase, Howard found himself on the bench for more than just poor play. The starting goaltender suffered a sprained MCL in mid-December, sidelining him until right before the Winter Classic.

Howard Continues Struggles, Wings Lose in Final Period

Jimmy Howard made his debut against the Nashville Predators after being out for almost three weeks due to an injured MCL, sustained in the beginning of December. Although the starting goaltender was recently elected to represent the United States at the 2014 Winter Olympics, he was not able to pull it together to get two important points for the Red Wings on Monday. Howard, Wings Fall, Winnipeg Sweeps

A disappointing performance from the Detroit Red Wings turned into a loss, in a shootout against the Winnipeg Jets Tuesday. Pavel Datsyuk, commonly known by the Red Wings color commentator Mickey Redmond as the ‘magic man’, put two goals past Winnipeg’s goaltender.
