Octopi Hockeytown NHL Mock Draft

The Detroit Red Wings will have the No. 15 pick overall in the 2014 NHL Draft on Friday, June 27 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

The first round will take place Friday and then rounds 2-7 will be hosted throughout the day on Saturday.

Since the Red Wings drafted Martin LaPointe at No. 10 overall in the 1991 NHL Draft, they have not had a higher draft pick than they do this year. At No. 15, the Wings have options to fill holes at the center position, winger position or the blue line.

Penalty Kill Struggles, Goal Scoring Frenzy in Capital

Alexander Ovechkin is one of the league’s most deadly shooters that the NHL has to offer, notching his 39th goal of the season in overtime on Sunday against the Red Wings.

The game was back and forth on Sunday. The first goal of the day was recorded just under five minutes into the game from Jason Chimera past Jimmy Howard, which was quickly followed by a power play goal from Washington’s Joel Ward. The first period ended with three power play goals, two for the Capitals and one for the Wings. Gustav Nyquist got the goal for the Wings, which went on to be his first of three goals and four points in 19:03 of ice time.

Wings Fall 5-0 in Philly

As the Red Wings walked off the ice at the Wells Fargo Center on Tuesday evening, they had their heads hung low weighed down by defeat. The Philadelphia Flyers came out with their top lines coming to take a win on home ice. Claude Giroux and Scott Hartnell led the Flyers to a demolition style defeat over the Wings as they alone had a combined six points on the night.

Solid goaltending is key in the National Hockey League. Steven Mason had a great representation of what it takes to stand tall against a Red Wing team thriving off of momentum.

Ten Red Wings Headed to Sochi Games

In February, Sochi, Russia, will be hosting the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. The ice hockey competition has once again placed marvelous teams together with a compilation of the best NHL players representing their homeland.

The Detroit Red Wings have ten players going to the games, six of which are playing for Sweden, two for Slovakia, one for Russia and one for the United States.

Lucky Goals Come Late, Wings Get Second Shootout Win

Niklas Kronwall perhaps got the luckiest goal of his NHL career on Saturday against the Los Angeles Kings.

The Red Wings were on a power play with just under 30 seconds to go in the third period, when the defenseman slapped a shot that deflected up and into the netting behind goaltender, Jonathan Quick.

The referees did not see the puck launch off a stick and up into the netting until the puck traveled from the netting down towards the goal, where it went off of the back of Quick and into the Kings’ net with 27 seconds left to go in regulation.

Pavelski, Sharks Beat Wings in the Shark Tank

Joe Pavelski has 12 goals in his past 15 games played, and that did not stop against the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday in the Shark Tank.

Pavelski and the San Jose Sharks took it to the Detroit Red Wings from the start of the game in Thursday’s contest. The Shark forward put the first goal of the game behind Red Wings goaltender, Jimmy Howard, just about five minutes into the game.
