After Tough Weekend, Volleyball Regroups for Bitter Rival Tonight

Spartans Travel to Oregon for Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge

The Spartans will face No. 18 Oregon and unranked Oregon State this weekend as part of the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge.

After dropping a pair of matches against No. 20 North Carolina and No. 19 Duke, the Spartans are eager to show they can put up a fight against ranked opponents and have been working on improvements this week in practice.

Spartans Show Improvement, but Fall to Duke in Five Sets

Big Ten-ACC Challenge play continued for the No. 14 Spartans Saturday evening against No. 19 Duke.

The Spartans displayed more cohesive offensive play than in Friday’s three-set loss to No. 20 North Carolina, but fell to the Blue Devils 3-2 in five sets: 25-13, 22-25, 25-23, 23-25, 10-15.

Spartan Volleyball Remains Undefeated after Opening Weekend

In the final game of the UAB/Samford Invitational, the No. 16 Spartans were trying to knock off co-host Samford to stay undefeated on the trip. The Spartans head back to East Lansing with a lot of momentum after a four-set victory.

The first set was close until MSU scored five straight points to make it 14-7. MSU’s Jazmine White had two service aces in a row to help the Spartans pull away to win the set, 25-12. Samford had nine attack errors in the first set. Kori Moster and Holly Toliver both had three digs in the first set.

Following MSU football’s 45-7 statement win against Jacksonville State Friday night, MSU volleyball looked to handle Jacksonville State today at the UAB/Samford Invitational tournament.

And in the end, this Jacksonville State team was game for the Spartans.

Volleyball Sweeps Both Opponents to Start Season

Following last year’s NCAA Tournament run that ended in the regional semifinals, the MSU volleyball team opened its season on Friday with unfinished business.

The Spartans’ first two matches of the season were played in Birmingham, Ala. against Southeastern Louisiana and the host, Alabama-Birmingham. The day could not have gone much better for the Spartans, as they swept each of their opponents 3-0.

Summer Camps End, Moster Instills Love of the Game

Though in the midst of preparations for the quickly approaching 2014 season, Spartan women’s volleyball spent some time giving back and instilling the love of the game in the hearts of young girls.

All-American libero Kori Moster is one of the Spartans working this year’s summer camps.

“Really just trying to make an impact on them as a volleyball player and make them have some fun,” Moster said.

Schedule Preview: Volleyball

With the addition of two teams to the Big Ten Conference this fall, the Spartans look to amp up their 2014 fall season with strong non-conference play and begin the battle of Big Ten volleyball with the release of the 2014-15 schedule.

In the 2013 season, eight teams from the Big Ten made it to the NCAA Tournament. The National Championship match was a Big Ten matchup between Wisconsin and Penn State, marking the Big Ten as one of the best volleyball conferences.

Volleyball Finalizes Recruiting Class

After back-to-back NCAA Tournament sweet sixteen appearances in the most competitive conference in the country, the loss of four seniors to graduation left volleyball coach Cathy George facing one of the toughest things to deal with as a college coach — rebuilding.

The Spartans lost Kristen Kelsay and All-American Alexis Mathews to graduation. Mathews traveled this past winter to participate in the USA Volleyball National Team’s winter training block in Anaheim, Calif. Kelsay was the Detroit Athletic Club 2013 Athlete of the Year and the fifth Spartan to ever earn the honor. Read More…

No. 20 Spartans to take on No. 2 Penn State in Sweet-16

After a 3-1 victory over No. 17 Kentucky at their home court in Lexington last Sunday, the Spartans’ next opponent will be No. 2 Penn State this Friday at 5 p.m.

Although the Nittany Lions are 1-1 this season against MSU, Penn State is now on a 21-game winning streak since their loss to MSU in September.

“We’re very familiar with them. They’re a great team, they have great momentum going into this tournament and some unbelievably physical players,” head coach Cathy George said.
