Bucknell Baffles Spartans at Home

After a long holiday layoff, the Spartan wrestlers returned to action Sunday against the Bisons of Bucknell. Unfortunately for the Spartans, the Bisons seemed to be firing on all cylinders.

The final score, 25-12 Bucknell, would seem to say that the Spartans were not competitive in the meet. That is just not true; they just could not quite replicate the same kind of scoring as the Bisons. Bucknell recorded a pin, technical fall and two major decisions against the Spartans. Read More…

Spartans Wake Up, Overwhelm Hoosiers

“Coach, you looked more like us.”

That was former Spartan Antonio Smith’s response to Tom Izzo on the effort that Michigan State gave in its 70-50 win against Indiana Monday night.

Jason’s Journal: MSU Hockey New Year’s Resolutions

2015 is now upon us, and if you are a college hockey fan then you are salivating at the mouth because the bulk of the Big Ten season starts in earnest in a few short weeks.

For Michigan State hockey (7-10-1 overall), 2015 offers a chance to “right the ship” so to speak on a so far sub-par season. Here are my six New Year’s resolutions for Spartan hockey in 2015. Read More…

Michigan Downs Spartans to Win GLI Crown

Another split for MSU, but this one hurts even more. The Michigan Wolverines beat the Spartans 2-1 to clinch the 2014 Great Lakes Invitational tournament championship.

In what was the 300th meeting between the two clubs (the most among any rivals in college hockey) Michigan won the first two periods, while MSU won the third, but could only put one behind Michigan goaltender Steve Racine. Read More…

Spartans Welcome Maryland to Big Ten Basketball

Michigan State will play welcoming committee for the Maryland Terrapins Saturday as both teams kick off their conference schedules.

Maryland brings a 12-1 record into the school’s first conference game as a member of the Big Ten.

Tom Izzo called Maryland probably the second best team in the Big Ten behind the powerhouse Wisconsin Badgers. Read More…

Spartans Bounce Back Against The Citadel

Michigan State returned to form Monday night with an 82-56 beatdown of The Citadel.

There was a sense of “here we go again” in the first half as Michigan State started slowly and the Bulldogs were hitting everything.

“Did you see the first two threes?” Tom Izzo said after the game, “The one the kid was looking at me, there was one second left on the shot clock, and he launched it and it went in.” Read More…

Hayes: Thoughts on Texas Southern Debacle

I had two ideas for columns following the disgusting display of sport that occurred at the Breslin Center Saturday afternoon but I couldn’t decide which one I liked better so this is going to be a two part shindig.

Michigan State must be willing to play inside

This team is built to shoot. I know this, you know this, anybody who has watched a college basketball game before knows this. But that’s not all this team can do. Read More…

Eagles Clipped in East Lansing

Riding high off of a 45-42 defeat of the Michigan Wolverines, the Eagles of Eastern Michigan came into East Lansing with an upset mindset. Unfortunately for the Eagles, the men of Sparta were in no mood to be a headline upset. The final score was 66-46 MSU. Read More…

MSU Wrestling had a strong showing this past Saturday at the Northern Iowa Open. Senior John Rizqallah and redshirt freshman Javier Gasca both took first at this weekend’s open tournament.

Men’s Basketball Roars Past Grizzlies

Coming into Sunday’s matchup, the Golden Grizzlies of Oakland University had been an unpredictable game for the Spartan hoop team. Last year, MSU pulled out a narrow four-point victory on Oakland’s home court. This year, that was not the case.

The final score of the game was 87-61 MSU, a victory that came behind some prolific marksmanship from beyond the arc. A three-point percentage of 58.8 with 10 of 17 three-point shots that MSU attempted finding their mark made it a tough night for the Grizzlies. Read More…
