In the final weekend of Big Ten conference play, the Northwestern Wildcats swept the Spartans.
Coming into the three-game series, the Wildcats were on a four-game losing streak before the Spartans came to town. This streak came to a stifling end, with the 8-0 victory the ‘Cats had over MSU on May 2, the first game of the series.
The Michigan State men’s golf season came to an end on Sunday, May 4 when the Spartans tied for seventh place at the Big Ten Championships in French Lick, Ind.
Michigan State shot their best round of the tournament on Sunday, an 11-over-par 299, but it was not enough to come back. The Spartans shot a 1212 (303-307-303-299) over the four rounds, as they posted the second-lowest mark of the third round, 303, just two shots behind the eventual champions, Minnesota Golden Gophers.
In a battle against the second best team in the Big Ten, MSU was swept for the second time this season.
After the Spartans easily dismantled the Northwestern Wildcats, they looked to continue their success in Champaign against Illinois. Spartan junior Mick VanVossen looked to improve over his last outing in the first of the three-game series.

With Bruce Rondon in the midst of Tommy John surgery, Luke Putkonen on the 15-day DL and a bullpen ERA of 5.37, the Tigers were floundering. On Friday, it was announced that Detroit acquired for closer Joel Hanrahan from the Red Sox. Hanrahan’s deal is set at one-year, $1 million dollars.
