Men’s Golf Prepares for 2014 Boilermaker Invitational

With the Big Ten Championship just over two weeks away, the Michigan State men’s golf team will look to fine-tune its play in West Lafayette, Ind. this weekend at the Boilermaker Invitational.

The Spartans are coming off a tie for ninth at the Hawkeye Invitational last weekend, and have not placed in the top three in a tournament since early March when they finished third in the Colleton River Collegiate.

Spartans Sink Boilermakers

Michigan State (10-13, 4-6) started off senior weekend with a bang, defeating No. 28 Purdue 5-2 at the outdoor tennis courts.

“It feels good to finally get one, especially for the seniors who were trying to give them a good sendoff,” said freshman Brett Forman, who won in both doubles and singles competition.

Lacrosse Looks to Bounce Back against Minnesota

After a seven-game winning streak was snapped with a loss to No. 19 Davenport, No. 8 Michigan State will try to regroup as they take on the Minnesota Golden Gophers Saturday.

Minnesota (8-4, 4-1) plays in the Upper Midwest Lacrosse Conference, where they are currently in second place.  They have won six of their last seven games, with the only loss coming to Minnesota-Duluth, whom MSU beat 9-5 earlier this season.

Spartans Prep for Clemson Invitational

Michigan State continues their crusade to reach the NCAA rankings this weekend at the two-day Clemson Invitational at Lake Hartwell, S.C. The Spartans have been just shy of the national polls for several weeks in a row, receiving eleven votes at the last polling period, and will need a strong performance this weekend if they hope to convince the voters that they deserve a spot in the NCAA Tourney.

Octopi Hockeytown: Playoff Preview – Round One

On Friday night, the Detroit Red Wings open their first round series against the NHL’s best team, the Boston Bruins. The Bruins accumulated 117 points during the season, enough to win the Presidents’ Trophy as the league’s best regular season squad.

With that being said, Detroit should have their hands full in the first round. However, as a seven seed in the Western Conference playoffs last year, the Red Wings beat the two-seeded Anaheim Ducks, and let a 3-1 series lead over one seed and eventual Stanley Cup champions, the Chicago Blackhawks, slip away.

On the second episode of Coxswain, host Nathaniel Gaynor fittingly recaps the MSU women’s rowing double dual in Belleville, Mich.

Men’s crew club picked up a race on April 5 at the Cincinnati Regatta after their home race, the Lansing State Cup, was cancelled. They finally begin their originally scheduled season in Spring Lake, Mich. and Nathaniel has the recap of the event.

What Re-signing Rashean Mathis Means for the Lions’ Organization

The Detroit Lions re-signed veteran cornerback Rashean Mathis on Monday. Last year, Mathis led the Lions’ secondary not only in age, but also stats.

With Mathis coming back to the roster, and the Lions’ recent signing of former Indianapolis Colts corner Cassius Vaughn, the total number of defensive backs on the roster rises to seven. The Lions’ secondary is also equipped with two underrated safeties in former Ravens Super Bowl champion James Ihedigbo and Detroit’s returning safety Glover Quin. Behind Quin and Ihedigbo is reliable veteran Don Carey and recent signing Isa Abdul-Quddus.

Track and Field Finish up Their Split Weekend

Michigan State’s track and field team concluded their split weekend at the Tennessee Relays and the Don Kleinow Invite at Siena Heights University with progress on their minds.

Starting off the competition on Friday at the Tennessee Relays in Knoxville, Tenn., redshirt freshman Vinny Gjokaj earned his first collegiate win in the discus with a PR of 53.46m.

Joe Dumars No Longer Pistons President

An anonymous source reports that three-time NBA Champion Joe Dumars is no longer the President of the Detroit Pistons.

This news comes as no surprise to many Pistons fans due to the fact that Dumars has missed the playoffs once again. Dumars will likely take on an advising role with the franchise.

In-State Rival Dominates Spartans

It was a cloudy Sunday as Michigan State faced off against the University of Michigan. Although the Spartans avoided a predicted rainstorm, they did not miss the downpour the Wolverines’ offense brought to the plate in the final inning.

Michigan State Stumbles against Minnesota

The Michigan State men’s tennis team lost their last away game of the season 5-2 to Minnesota, bringing their road record to 1-11.

The Spartans (9-13, 3-6) split their weekend series against Minnesota and Wisconsin. Michigan State will close the regular season portion of their schedule this upcoming weekend.
