Mike Sadler Named Preseason First-Team All-American

Mike Sadler was one of the best punters in the nation last season, pinning a nation-leading 24 punts within the opponent’s 10-yard-line. Despite his impressive numbers and knack for converting fake punts in clutch situations, he was not named a finalist for the Ray Guy Award last season, given each year to the nation’s top punter.

Going into 2014, however, Athlon Sports projects that Sadler is a front runner for the Award, naming him as their preseason First-Team All-American.

Sadler is not the only Spartan representative, as four others join him on the list. Shilique Calhoun, the Big Ten’s reigning Defensive Lineman of the Year, was named to the second team.

Senior Kurtis Drummond was named a third-team safety, while cornerback Trae Waynes and running back Jeremy Langford were named to the fourth team.

Michigan State’s five players on the list was tied for first in the Big Ten with Ohio State.

Ohio State’s defensive tackle Michael Bennett was named to the first team, quarterback Braxton Miller, tight end Jeff Heuerman, and punter Cameron Johnston were named to the third team and defensive end Joey Bosa was named to the fourth team.
