The Spartans and No. 14 Wolverines faced-off at Munn Ice Arena for their third matchup of the season. With the series tied 1-1, the Wolverines took over late in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and run away with a 5-2 victory.
After an unexpected visit at the Great Lakes Invitational, Michigan State and Michigan butted heads once again in there annual showdown at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit Thursday evening.
Two games, two neutral arenas, and now, two different winners. After being shutout by the Spartans in the consolation game at the GLI, the Michigan Wolverines evened the series with the Spartans.
DETROIT – The Michigan State Spartans (8-11-3) and Michigan Wolverines (11-6-2) faced-off at Joe Louis Arena in their second clash of the season. Michigan’s Phil Di Giuseppe scored with 2:18 remaining to brake a 1-1 tie and even the series.
Perhaps the perfect lead into Saturday’s basketball game against the dastardly maize and blue is a matchup on the ice at Munn Ice Arena between the Michigan State Spartans and the Michigan Wolverines.
These two teams have met twice already this season, albeit one was not an official game and they have both won one game apiece. At the consolation game of the GLI (Great Lakes Invitational), the Spartans made a mockery of the Wolverines in a 3-0 whitewash. However, the Wolverines returned the favor with a 2-1 victory over the Spartans at Joe Louis Arena last Thursday.
On what may be one of the more critical weekends of this Big Ten hockey season, Michigan State (6-10-3) will host Penn State (4-12-1) for two matchups on Friday, Dec. 17 and Saturday, Dec. 18 at Munn Ice Arena. Despite coming up short at the Great Lakes Invitational over winter break, the Spartan hockey team has a lot of positives to build on, and it appears they are peaking at just the right time.

After coming up short against Michigan Tech in their first game on Friday afternoon, the Spartans were looking to bounce back against the Michigan Wolverines.
Michigan State and Michigan are scheduled to play each other four times this season, but got an early look at each other on Saturday.
