Jose Iglesias on Disabled List until All-Star Break

Detroit was so, so close to having a complete team coming into the 2014 season. But on Saturday, Tigers fans heard some bad news.

Through sources and speculation, it seems Iglesias will do more than just start the season on the disabled list. He is expected to stay there until at least the All-Star break and perhaps even beyond.

The main injury appears to be a problem in both of Iglesias’s shins. Detroit has put out no official statement of his injury beyond a quote from Dombrowski nearly identical to the tweet.

The extent of the injury will be better known after Iglesias visits a specialist on Tuesday.

Detroit’s front office, once again, has work to do in filling Iglesias’s speedy shoes. Jhonny Peralta and Ramon Santiago, both available to play short in 2013, did not receive new contracts from Detroit.

Speculation now surrounds Stephen Drew, and whether the Tigers are willing to drop nearly an expected $9 million to sign the free agent to a one-year deal.

Steve Lombardozzi and Danny Worth, both natural second basemen, have been switching off the shortstop role in Florida.

For now, Iglesias’ absence hurts more than just on defense. His .303 batting average, .349 OBP and speed on the basepaths makes the 24-year-old a key player on this retooled Detroit team.
