Michigan Downs Spartans to Win GLI Crown

Another split for MSU, but this one hurts even more. The Michigan Wolverines beat the Spartans 2-1 to clinch the 2014 Great Lakes Invitational tournament championship.

Gophers Beat Spartans in Big Ten Home Opener

Over 5,000 fans left Munn Ice Arena disappointed Friday night, as the Michigan State Spartans fell to the No. 6 Minnesota Golden Gophers 5-0 in Michigan State’s Big Ten home opener.

The Spartans started strong and set the pace early in the game, but an early penalty by JT Stenglein gave Minnesota’s powerplay (which was .293 coming into this game) a chance to take the momentum. A nifty passing play set up Travis Boyd (no relation to Ron Boyd of MSU) for a tap-in and an easy power-play goal, which made it 1-0 Gophers. Read More…

Spartans Fail to Earn Sweep Against Buckeyes

Consistency continues to elude the Michigan State hockey team. After skating to an impressive 3-1 victory over Ohio State on Thursday night, the Spartans had a momentous opportunity to earn a sweep and start turning the corner. The Buckeyes had other plans however, as Ohio State shutout the Spartans 3-0 on Friday night .

After a scoreless first period, Ohio State opened the scoring early in the second. A two-on-one shot by Matt Johnson initially was ruled a no-goal, but after a video review on the next stoppage it was ruled that Johnson had indeed beat MSU goalie Jake Hildebrand. That made it 1-0 OSU 2:16 into the second period. Read More…

Opinion: Breaking Down Men’s Hockey’s Newest Recruits

The early-signing period for the NLI has come and gone and Michigan State hockey has done quite well. The Spartans recently announced five NLI signees that will join the team as freshmen next season.

Unlike last year’s class that was primarily defensive-minded (highlighted by D-man Josh Jacobs and goaltender Ed Minney) next year’s class will likely add some much-needed scoring depth and potential to the roster. Read More…
