The Red Wings franchise goes much deeper than just the players that put on the Winged Wheel night in and night out. Beyond the hunt for free agents, the formulation of contracts and devising a plan to meet the salary cap, general manager Ken Holland alongside head coach Mike Babcock work to create both a great dynamic in the Wings locker room as well as their AHL affiliates.

Beyond Babcock and Holland is a long list of coaches and developers that help create young prospects into NHL superstars. The Red Wings have lived by a motto of playing three years in the AHL before playing in the NHL.

Octopi Hockeytown – #2 – 2/5/14

So far, it has been interesting.

The Detroit Red Wings are fifth in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference with 62 points in 56 games. They are currently in the last playoff spot of the regular season if the season were to end today. Austin talks about the Wings’ solid play that has helped them wind up in a spot where they can still compete to keep their playoff streak alive.

They go into their last two games before Sochi starting Thursday, against the Florida Panthers, and finishing up Friday against Tampa Bay. Austin Goodman breaks down past week’s play against Philadelphia, Washington and Vancouver.

Zetterberg Returns, Scores and Leads in Victory

Team captain Henrik Zetterberg made a key return on Saturday evening. The Wings faced off against the Florida Panthers after a four-day break, giving the team just the right amount of time to nurse their injured and bring back the names the team has been relying on over the past few years.
