Athletes of the Week: Jamie Cheslik and Zach Bennett

Freshman forward, Jamie Cheslik has been nothing short of exceptional this year for the Spartans when it comes to scoring goals and showing her perseverance in matches.

Cheslik leads Michigan State with seven goals, which is tied for sixth place in the Big Ten. She also has two game-winning goals for her team this season which have come on the road against Oakland University and California State University, Fullerton. Read More…

Spartans Back to Winning Ways as Bennett Breaks Shutout Record

In a back and forth match that saw Akron University with much of the possession, the Spartans found a way to put one in the back of the net and kept the Zips from scoring.

Women’s Soccer Get First Conference Win

There was a different pep in the Lady Spartans’ step today during warmups, and it continued into the game against the University of Nebraska.

Women’s Soccer Unable to Overcome Winless Streak

After losing a close match to the Wolverines last Saturday, the Lady Spartans were looking to get back on track Thursday night, but could not break their winless streak in conference play against the Hawkeyes.

Spartans Create Chances, Just Can’t Finish

In a game which Michigan State controlled most of the possession, the Spartans could not put one in the back of the net against Rutgers University, eventually finishing in a 0-0 tie.

From the start of the game, the Spartans brought relentless pressure on the Scarlet Knight defense, earning 12 set pieces in the entire first half, nine of those being corner kicks.

Last-Minute Goal Puts Wolverines Past Spartans

In front of a sellout crowd in Ann Arbor, Mich., Michigan State and the University of Michigan battled for 90 minutes for bragging rights in the state of Michigan.

The Wolverines had their chances early in the game inside the Spartans’ 18-yard-box, but could not convert as the Michigan State defense stood tall and blocked their shots.

After a game full of turnovers against the Valparaiso University Crusaders on Thursday, the Spartans regained composure and their shutout streak against the Loyola University Chicago Ramblers, 1-0 Sunday.

Golden Gophers Slip past Spartans in Overtime

After losing to the University of Wisconsin on Friday, Michigan State dropped their second Big Ten game against the University of Minnesota in overtime, 1-0.

The Spartans were out shot by the Golden Gophers 17-7, but the game was much closer than the numbers on the stat sheet, despite tired legs and a few injured Spartans.

Badgers Hand Lady Spartans First Loss

In a back-and-forth game in which both teams had multiple opportunities to put goals on the scoreboard, the No. 9 Wisconsin Badgers slipped past the Michigan State Spartans 2-1 in overtime.

From the start of the game, Wisconsin controlled much of the possession in the first half and had early chances in the Spartans’ final third, but could not convert within the first 10 minutes.

Michigan State had a fair share of scoring chances in the first half, with an opportunity in the seventh minute.

Crusaders Hand Spartans First Loss of Season

In a physical and offensive battle that saw a combined 32 shots from both teams, Valparaiso University edged out No. 7 Michigan State, 1-0 in a close game.

From the start of the whistle, the Spartans and Crusaders battled it out for the first 18 minutes of the game until senior forward, Adam Montague, collided with Valpo goalkeeper, Nico Campbell, on a 50-50 ball inside the Crusaders’ six-yard box.

Lady Spartans Extend Winning Streak to Six Games

After defeating the Western Michigan Broncos 3-2 in double overtime, Michigan State tied its third-longest undefeated streak to start a season in program history.

The Spartans longest winning streak was eight games, which they have done twice. Once in 1986 (8-1-0) under former head coach, Joe Baum, and then in 2008 (8-0-0) under current head coach, Tom Saxton.

Lady Spartans in Control against IPFW

From kickoff until the final whistle, Michigan State was in the driver’s seat as they controlled the flow and tempo of the game against Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne.

The Spartan offense got going early when junior defender, Alex Gjonaj, delivered a ball from a free kick, 35 yards out, into the Mastodon 18-yard box, which found the foot of junior midfielder, Sarah Kovan, who volleyed the ball into the goal.

Cheslik’s Late Goal Keeps Spartans Winning Streak Alive

In a back and forth game in which Oakland University and Michigan State had multiple opportunities to take control of the game early, the Spartans fought through to earn a1-0 win.

It did not take the Spartans long to find scoring opportunities as four minutes into the game, senior forward Paige Wester crossed a ball into the 18-yard box, which found senior midfielder Megan Marsack who volleyed right at Oakland goalkeeper Allison Holland.

Late Goal Gives MSU First Win

The Southern Methodist University Mustangs may have only won three games last season, but they did not look like a three win team Friday night as they played the Spartans tough for 90 minutes.

Right from the kickoff, SMU put pressure on No. 10 Michigan State and created multiple scoring opportunities, with their best scoring chance coming in the 10th minute when the Mustangs sent a dangerous ball into the Spartans’ 18-yard box, which hit a head and forced MSU goalkeeper, Zach Bennett, to make a diving save in the air to prevent the goal.

More than a Season Opener for Bennett

Michigan State and Southern Methodist University will face off for the first time in their programs’ history at DeMartin Stadium on Friday, but there is more to this first meeting than meets the eye.

This matchup means a little bit more to starting junior goalkeeper, Zach Bennett, of Plano, Texas.

“Obviously SMU was the closest D-1 soccer program to me when I was growing up,” Bennett said. “So (it is) a little extra motivation and obviously (SMU has) a lot of friends and guys I played against growing up through high school and stuff as well.”
