Athlete of the Week: Mackenzie MacEachern

This week’s Athlete of the Week is Mackenzie MacEachern. MacEachern is a sophomore forward on the men’s ice hockey team.

This season, MacEachern has recorded five goals and five assists, including a goal in the Spartans’ thrilling tie against Minnesota Dec. 6.

Persistence Pays Off for Spartans in Big Win

It was a special night at Munn Ice Arena Sunday night, as it marked the sixth annual Teddy Bear Toss, a holiday tradition where fans are encouraged to bring teddy bears to donate to children.

On the ice, perseverance paid huge dividends for Michigan State, on Sunday night as the Spartans erased three one-goal deficits en route to a 6-4 win against Clarkson. Read More…

Spartans Bounce Back with Thrilling Tie Saturday Night

The difference between Friday night’s game and Saturday night’s game was night and day. Brent Darnell scored twice and Jake Hildebrand had a strong bounce-back game with 21 saves in leading the Spartans to a thrilling 3-3 tie against Minnesota. Michigan State would go on to win the shootout to gain the extra point in the Big Ten standings.

It was one of the best team games of the season according to head coach Tom Anastos, one night after one of the worst for the Spartans. Read More…

Men’s Hockey Splits Series in New Jersey

For the fifth time in five series, Michigan State earned one win and one loss. This time, the Spartans split their series with Princeton in New Jersey.

Friday night, Michigan State got on the board first on a power-play goal by Michael Ferrantino just over two minutes into the second period. Matt Berry and Travis Walsh assisted on Ferrantino’s team-leading sixth goal of the season. Read More…

Men’s Hockey Drops Another Close Game

The Spartans closed out a rough non-conference schedule with a 3-2 loss to Boston College Friday night at Munn. Eight different Eagles registered a point and Thatcher Demko made 31 saves in the win for Boston College.

With Boston College coming into the game losing four of their last five, Michigan State needed to jump on the Eagles early, but the start did not go to plan. Read More…

Munn Celebrates Its 40th Birthday

In 1950, ice hockey returned as a varsity sport to Michigan State University after a 19-year hiatus that started in 1931. That year, the team went 0-14 but it had a new home at Demonstration Hall. The Spartans would stay there for 24 seasons and one national championship before a new arena was built right across the street in Dem Hall’s backyard.

The new arena hosted its first Spartan hockey game on Oct. 25, 1974. People packed in to watch Michigan State take on Laurentian University. The Spartans would have to wait until the next day to register their first win in their new home, as they defeated the Voyageurs 4-1 to split the series. Read More…

Men’s Hockey Splits Weekend at New Hampshire

The Michigan State men’s hockey team went on the road looking to return to East Lansing with a 4-4 record, but they could not get the sweep they wanted as they split their series with the University of New Hampshire.

On Friday, the Spartans’ offense started right where it left off against Ferris State.

Men’s Hockey Bounces Back with Big Win

After virtually no puck luck in a disappointing loss Friday night, the puck had a change of heart Saturday night and started to bounce in Michigan State’s favor.

Field Hockey Falls on Senior Day to Louisville

It was not the senior day the No. 19 Spartans were looking for as they fell to No. 9 Louisville 2-1 on Saturday. Becky Stiles got Michigan State’s lone tally and Sierra Patton made two saves.

Both offenses were rather quiet in the first half with Louisville outshooting the Spartans 5-2. Once the second half started, the offense showed up. Read More…

Bad Luck on Offense Haunts Spartans Again

The ghost that has tormented the Michigan State men’s ice hockey team for the last few seasons came out in full force again tonight. The Spartans threw 76 shots towards the net, 36 of them ended up on goal, but they could not get one to go past C.J. Motte, as Michigan State dropped a stinger to Ferris State 1-0 on a snowy Halloween night at Munn.

This marks the fourth consecutive one-goal loss for the Spartans, who now have been shut out twice in the last three games. It’s also Michigan State’s fifth-straight loss to Ferris State (the last two were both shutouts) and their ninth loss in the last 10 games against the Bulldogs. Read More…
