President Mel Walker and head coach Ian Hoopingarner explain how they got involved with Quidditch as well as what they ate for breakfast. Public Relations Coordinator Maggie Hermanson and Intramural Coordinator Kevin Fennell talk about the upcoming intramural season, two upcoming tournaments and give an inside scoop to what goes on in the quidditch community.

Secret Society – #1 – 2/19/14

Michigan State men’s and women’s ultimate frisbee came into the studio with host Bradley Allen for the first episode of Secret Society.

Secret Society will be a regular podcast featuring guests representing MSU club sports. The first segment of every podcast will be focused on guest interviews about their sport and their team, while the second segment will consist of lighter questions that delve into the esoteric “secrets” of life on a club sports team at MSU.

Men’s Ultimate Plays Hurt in Charlotte, Has Car Accidents on Way Home

The Michigan State men’s ultimate frisbee team, better known as The Burning Couch traveled to Charlotte, N.C., last weekend to play in their first tournament of the spring semester. While MSU hoped the tournament would prove a prime opportunity to face the nation’s top competition in ultimate frisbee, the injury-ridden team faced many roadblocks along the way and along the way back too.

Club Quidditch Hosts Winter Fantasy Tournament

Lansing, Mich. – Flurries adding to the piles of deep snow did not stop quidditch players from playing all day Saturday.

The Spartan Spitfires, Michigan State’s co-ed quidditch team hosted a tournament at the Holt Soccer Complex Saturday. Ohio State, Bowling Green, Ball State, Central Michigan, Southern Illinois, Toledo and Miami of Ohio were some of the colleges represented at the tournament.

Opinion: Lions Season a Success on Thanksgiving

As I watched the Lions get set to take the field against the Packers on Thursday at Ford Field, it dawned on me how important a victory would be for the team. Obviously, being tied with the Bears atop the NFC North with a chance at a second playoff berth in three years, a divisional rival game is important. Obviously, it would be nice to win a game at home on Thanksgiving and avoid losing 10 straight on the holiday. Having the privilege of going to over a dozen Thanksgiving Day Lions games in my lifetime, I could sense something was different about this game. Read More…

Dodgeball Team Wins MSU Invitational

Michigan State’s dodgeball team hosted a six-team tournament at I.M. West last Sunday and took home the title with wins over Bowling Green, Ohio State and Siena Heights.  It was a huge win for the Spartans, who had a slow start to the 2013-14 season, coming into the tournament with an 0-5 record.

At their last practice before the tournament, captain Mike Van Ermen told his team this would be the biggest tournament of the year. Read More…

Spartan Dodgeball Gears Up for Tournament

MSU Dodgeball was firing on all cylinders late Thursday night at I.M. Circle, in their last practice before hosting a six team tournament this weekend.

The Spartans, who lost to Grand Valley in the National Championship last season, are looking to get back to the top of their game.  After three tough outings early this season, the Spartans are winless. But hope to get back to championship caliber play they are accustomed to.

MSU Qualifies for Quidditch World Cup

The Spartan Spitfires traveled to Rockford Illinois to compete in the Midwest Regional Cup this past weekend and had a tremendous outing.  MSU Quidditch went undefeated in pool play, and made it to the semi-finals in the tournament of 26 teams.  After a win over Miami (OH) in bracket play, MSU officially qualified for World Cup VII. Twitter Reaction to Week 8 #DALvsDET

The Detroit Lions won 31-30 in a thriller on Sunday, as Matthew Stafford literally sneaked into the end zone with 12 seconds remaining.

Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant created a great deal of hype leading up to the game, claiming that he was better than Calvin Johnson. Bryant certainly had Twitter blowing up after a long touchdown reception, following his sideline temper-tantrum. Read More…

Lions Fall Short 27-24 to Bengals

A last-second field goal by Cincinnati Bengals’ Mike Nugent sealed the deal for the Bengals, as they stunned the Lions at Ford Field Sunday.

Lions Wide Receiver Calvin “Megatron” Johnson came through with the play of the game, with an incredible catch in triple coverage to tie the game at 24 in the fourth quarter. Johnson also had an impressive 27-yard touchdown in the 3rd quarter, but, in the end, his stand-out performance was not enough for the Lions to come out on top. Read More…
