Spartans Match up with Cavaliers in Sweet Sixteen

Madison Square Garden will be rocking Friday night when two of college basketball’s hottest teams face off for a bid to the Elite Eight.

No. 1 Virginia cruised through their first two games of the tournament, beating No. 16 Coastal Carolina and No. 8 Memphis by a combined 29 points. The Cavaliers earned the No. 1 seed by beating Duke in the ACC Tournament and have one of the best defenses in the nation.

Spartans Finish with a Loss

There were missed opportunities in the final minute of the game Sunday afternoon. But Ohio State held on to beat No. 22 Michigan State, 69-67.

On senior day for the Buckeyes, senior Aaron Craft was his usual, pesky self, setting the all-time Big Ten record for steals with his first steal of the game on Keith Appling. Craft scored 12 points, had seven assists and four steals.

Spartans Finish Regular Season against Buckeyes

Michigan State plays in its second senior night, in as many games, as they head to Columbus, Ohio Sunday to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes. It wraps up the Big Ten regular season.

Two months ago, this game looked like it could decide the Big Ten regular season champion. Now these teams are just looking to get hot as the postseason tournaments approach.

Spartans Bounce Back against Hawkeyes

Thursday night was senior night at the Breslin Center, but it was the sophomores and juniors who stole the show as Michigan State beat Iowa, 86-76.

Travis Trice was 4-5 from the field and led the Spartans with 17 points off the bench. Denzel Valentine looked well on his way to a triple-double in the first half, but finished with 13 points, six rebounds and nine assists.

Spartans Finish Home Schedule against No. 24 Hawkeyes

With their shot of at least a share of the Big Ten regular season completely gone, Michigan State tries to build their tournament resume as they take on Iowa Thursday tonight in East Lansing.

The Spartans have dropped their last two games and three out of their last four. Including tonight’s Iowa game, MSU has two games left before the start of the Big Ten tournament.

Lady Spartans Play with Big Ten Title on the Line

After a great road win against Northwestern, the Michigan State Spartans (20-8, 12-3) return back home to take on Indiana (18-10, 5-10).

Along with this being the final game of the season, it is also the swan song for seniors Annalise Pickrel and Klarissa Bell. Both will be honored after the game Sunday night.

Big Ten Title Hopes Fading Fast

With Sunday’s 79-70 loss at the hands of the Wolverines, Michigan State is virtually eliminated from one seed contention for the tournament. The Spartans dropped five spots to No. 18 in both polls this week while Michigan moved up four places to No. 16. With only three games remaining in the season, MSU must focus on their own play, not what everyone is doing around them.

In Joe Lunardi’s latest bracketology, he has the Spartans down to a three seed. With only three games left in the regular season, MSU needs to focus on winning out for any chance at a Big Ten regular season title. The Spartans are one game back in the loss column from Michigan, who has a much easier end to the regular season.

Wolverines Overwhelm Michigan State

In a game that was truly a tale of two halves, the No. 20 Michigan Wolverines defeated No. 13 Michigan State 79-70 Sunday afternoon, to take full control of the top spot in the Big Ten.

The Spartans started off well, never trailing in the first half after Michigan led 4-2. MSU led by five in the closing seconds of the first half when Caris LeVert hit a three as time expired, to pull the Wolverines within two at the break.

Spartans Shoot the Lights out in Win Over Purdue

Gary Harris and company hosted a shooting clinic in West Lafayette, Ind. on Thursday.

Michigan State started their game against Purdue on an unprecedented 11-14 streak from beyond the arc. Harris led the way for the Spartans with six three-pointers, finally breaking out of his shooting slump. He finished with 25 points, far surpassing his average of just over 13 points per game during his six-game shooting slump.

Entering Saturday night’s game, both No. 3 Michigan State and No. 21 Michigan were undefeated in conference play. Michigan’s Nik Stauskas lead the Wolverines to a 80-75 victory over the Spartans with 19 points. The Wolverines have won five of seven in the series after losing 18 of 21.
