Spartans Fall to Central Michigan on Senior Night

Michigan State was defeated by Central Michigan, 21-12, on Senior Night at Jenison Field House.

Before the dual, a ceremony was held for the class of 2015. Ryan Watts, Kevin Nash, John Rizqallah, Nick Proctor, Nick McDiarmid and Luke Jones were all honored.

The Spartans found themselves in a hole after the first match at 174 pounds. Proctor was pinned by Jordan Ellingwood less than a minute into the match.

At 184 pounds, Rizqallah lost to Austin Severn, 4-2, with only five seconds left in overtime. The two traded a takedown for two escapes and neither could get the upper hand until the end there.

The Spartans rebounded by winning the next four matches.

At 197 pounds, McDiarmid started the rally by extending his winning streak to five when he beat Jackson Lewis, 3-1, in overtime and put the Spartans on the board.

Chris Nash then defeated Newton Smerchek, 3-1, by recording a takedown with seven seconds left. Mitch Rogaliner then tied it up after he defeated Brent Fleetwood, 3-1, with a late takedown at 125 pounds.

Garth Yenter defeated Carter Ballinger, 10-4, at 133 pounds and allowed the Spartans to take the lead. He gave up a late takedown, but recorded 4:19 of riding time.

After that, the rally fell short and Central Michigan won the rest of the matches.

At 141 pounds, Hermilo Esquivel lost to No. 10 Zach Horan, 3-1. Horan recorded a controversial takedown near the end of the first, but the call was held up.

Nick Trimble lost to No. 16 Colin Heffernan, 1-0, at 149 and Michigan State’s hopes were almost lost. Heffernan took a 1-0 lead into the third and never let Trimble up.

At 157 pounds, Travis Curley could not keep up with Cody LeCount, and lost, 5-1. Lastly, Matt Pasqualini lost to Jordan Wohlfert, 6-4, at 165 pounds.

Michigan State will be in Columbus, Ohio on March 8-9 for the Big Ten Championships.
