Report: Tom Izzo to Be Targeted by Pistons

March Madness is upon us, but could the Pistons be looking to join the action? According to a Sports Illustrated report, the Pistons are expected to pursue Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo to be their new head coach this offseason.

Detroit fired their first year coach Maurice Cheeks back on February 9, and have been led by John Loyer ever since. During that time the Pistons have failed to live up to their preseason expectations and have produced a record of 26-44.

Izzo is known as one of the best coaches in college basketball with a career record of 467-186, but he has never spent time as an NBA coach. Izzo has been to 12 Sweet Sixteens (including this season), seven Elite Eights, five Final Fours, and two national championship games where he has won one of them.

Tom Gores, the Pistons owner, is a Michigan State University graduate and the ties to Izzo make sense. Gores is expected to part ways with Joe Dumars after this season, so this is the first time Gores will have to make a front office decision on his own.

If Detroit does pursue Izzo, they could have a hard time getting him to leave East Lansing.

Izzo has spent his entire career at MSU and is very close with Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis and head football coach Mark Dantonio.

The Pistons still have 11 games left in the regular season, so more names will continue to hit the rumor mill. Only time will tell if Izzo is a serious head coaching candidate.
